      About the Family & Social Services Administration (FSSA):

      FSSA was established by the Indiana General Assembly in 1991 to consolidate and better integrate the delivery of human services by state government. FSSA is a health care and social services funding agency. Ninety-four percent of the agency’s total budget is paid to thousands of service providers ranging from major medical centers to a physical therapist working with a child or adult with a developmental disability. The six care divisions in FSSA administer services to more than 1.5 million Hoosiers. FSSA’s mission is to compassionately serve Hoosiers of all ages and connect them with social services, health care and their communities. The Office of Healthy Opportunities (OHO) is responsible for identifying and addressing risk factors related to equitable health outcomes through the work of our staff multiple teams and workgroups.

      The Governor's Public Service Summer Internship (GPSSI) program was created in 1989 to introduce bright and motivated college students to the operations and officials of state government. This program provides interns the opportunity to work with state agency officials, as we as participate in co-curricular components to enrich their experience.

      Salary: This is a paid internship with the hourly rate of $16.24.


      Role Overview : This role, Governor's Summer Intern - Office of Healthy Opportunity, supports the design and implementation of equitable social service systems for the State of Indiana and helps further the agency's mission to dismantle long-standing, persistent inequities. You will conduct research tasks concerning the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (504), Architectural Barriers Act (ABA), the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and other relevant accessibility and disability related legislation and guidance. Your role collaborates with the ADA Coordinator to learn how to respond to inquiries as appropriate in future employment settings where ADA responses would be required and to perform ADA evaluations of workspaces and public offices either in a virtual or face-to-face capacity. Your role assists with researching, drafting, and presenting related info. to various stakeholders.

      The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in exploring health equity-related topics and excellent research skills. A basic knowledge of service animals, emotional support animals, and disability etiquette is desired. Experience with program planning and development is desired. Interns may work up to 15 hours per week remotely.

      A Day in the Life:

      The essential functions of this role are as follows:

      • Identify and execute one major project related to agency needs and academic area of study
      • Create, develop, and sustain the programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline
      • Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations
      • Partner with other relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance the quality of projects
      • Collaborate with State of Indiana agencies to ensure effective implementation of internal and external initiatives

      • Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.

      • Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels
      • Ability to conduct well-informed research
      • Ability to solve complex, critical problems
      • Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures
      • Ability to maintain confidentiality
