Develop probabilistic and deep learning models as applied to analytical chemistry and chromatography.
Deliver documented and unit-tested code, visualizations, in-depth user-facing documentation, and stakeholder-facing written and oral presentations on the chosen project.
Keep abreast of, and where appropriate, apply recent advances in machine learning and optimization. Analyze and critically evaluate results and adapt existing methods or propose new methods accordingly.
Collaborate with data scientists inside DSAI primarily and with research scientists and engineers across Moderna.
Additional duties as may be assigned from time to time
Current M.Sc. or Ph.D. student.
Prior experience in building and training convolutional neural networks in PyTorch and/or JAX (Equinox).
Prior classroom and/or laboratory experience with chromatography.
Prior experience with scalable, distributed machine learning model training on millions of samples.
Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and virtual/remote).
Fluency in Python, especially the scientific Python stack (Jupyter/Pandas/scikit-learn/PyTorch)
Willing and able to relocate to Cambridge, MA for the co-op
Indefinite right to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship now or in the future.
Basic software skills (documentation, testing, and code organization)
Experience with non-MLP neural network architectures (RNN, Transformers, GNNs)
Experience in generating synthetic data from probabilistic models
Prior experience with version control systems (Git)
Prior experience with AWS
Prior experience using PyTorch Lightning
Motivated to solve scientific problems in healthcare.

The Role
Moderna is seeking a talented and motivated intern with a background in applying probabilistic and machine learning methods to problems in research and development to join our Data Science and Artificial Intelligence team for the first half of 2024. As part of our mission to “Build The Digital Biotech Company ”, we see a central role for DSAI in accelerating the science and engineering at the heart of our innovative culture. As an intern within the DSAI team, this role will be responsible for developing training machine learning models with applications in automated analysis of chromatography data, with a long-term impact on Moderna’s biological and chemical technology processes. They will be accountable for delivering clean code, deployed models on our internal computational infrastructure, user-friendly documentation, and presentations on their project. We are looking for someone who is detail-oriented, deeply curious, exhibits an excellent work ethic, and is eager to expand their existing machine learning skillsets with cutting-edge methods while applying them to impactful scientific questions.
Our Winter/Spring co-op program will run from January 16 – June 14, 2024. All applicants must be available to work full-time for the entire duration of the program.
