      Registered Nurse Job Description

      Purpose Statement

      The job of Special Services Classroom Nurse is done for the purpose/s of supporting the health and medical needs of assigned students in the special education program, including those who are medically fragile or have complex health conditions; implementing individualized healthcare plans; collaborating with special education team; providing emergency and routine care; ensuring compliance with state and federal health regulations; and serving as a liaison among families, school staff, and healthcare providers.

      Essential Functions

      • Collaborates with case managers, health professionals, and related service providers as well as staff (e.g. special education teachers, paraprofessionals, special services nurse coordinator, therapists, etc.) for the purpose of integrating medical and educational support, providing information, and complying with legal requirements.
      • Communicates regularly with parents/guardians and healthcare providers for the purpose of sharing student needs, changes in condition, and updates to care plans.
      • Conducts and documents mandated health screening in collaboration with the building school nurse (e.g. vision, dental, hearing, scoliosis, etc.) for the purpose of referring medical conditions for students in the special education program.
      • Delivers specialized medical care (e.g. G-tube feedings, catheterization, seizure management, tracheostomy care, etc.) for the purpose of providing appropriate care to medically complex and/or fragile students.
      • Educates and trains special education teachers and paraprofessionals on medical protocols and emergency procedures (i.e. seizure response) for the purpose of ensuring students' safety and care.
      • Implements and monitors Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) in accordance with physician orders and IEP requirements for the purpose of providing appropriate care to student with special needs.
      • Maintains accurate, confidential files and records (e.g. health care plans, consent forms, physician orders, communication logs, etc.) for the purpose of providing information required by legal requirements and professional standards.
      • Monitors immunization compliance of assigned special education students in accordance with state law for the purpose of complying with legal requirements.
      • Monitors students in the special education program with chronic health conditions and disabilities for the purpose of promoting optimum health and participation in academic activities.
      • Participates in IEP meetings for the purpose of providing medical insight, health history, and developing medically necessary accommodations and emergency action plans.
      • Participates in a variety of meetings, workshops and seminars, and interdisciplinary teams for the purpose of gathering, conveying and/or sharing information on students health needs, service delivery, and educational programs, and/or improving skills and knowledge.
      • Performs routine and emergency medical interventions in special education classrooms and resource rooms for the purpose of ensuring student safety and medical stability.
      • Provides ongoing support and health education to staff, students, and families for the purpose of educating them on topics relevant to disabilities, hygiene, nutrition, medication management, and overall well-being.
      • Reports health and safety issues to assigned administrator and appropriate agencies (e.g. fights, suspected child or substance abuse, contagious diseases, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining students personal safety, a positive learning environment and complying with regulatory requirements and established guidelines.
      • Researches a variety of topics relating to health and medical care (e.g. wellness, nutrition, treatment protocols, childhood diseases, etc.) for the purpose of providing information to staff, students, parents, and the public.
      • Responds promptly to medical emergencies for the purpose of ensuring appropriate immediate medical attention and related follow-up action.

      Other Functions

      Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

      Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

      Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

      SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: applying pertinent codes, policies, regulations, and/or laws; applying assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment including pertinent software applications; preparing detailed documentation and individual health plans; adhering to safety practices; administering care and first aid to students with complex health needs; operating medical equipment and technology commonly found in school-based special education environments; and providing training and oversight to non-medical personnel.

      KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: state and federal laws related to students with disabilities (e.g. IDEA, Section 104); health standards and hazards; stages of child development; district procedures and legal requirements; and treatment modalities.

      ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; working as part of a team; working with frequent interruption; adhering to safety practices; and being attentive to details.

      Responsibility

      Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to significantly impact the organization’s services.

      Work Environment

      The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 40% sitting, 30% walking, 30% standing. The job is performed under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

      Experience: Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is desired.

      Education (Minimum): Community college and/or vocational school degree with study in job-related area.

      Education (Preferred): Bachelors degree in nursing (BSN) with focus or experience in special education, pediatrics, or community health.

      Certification in specialized care preferred (e.g. seizure management, trach care...)
