      Temporary full time position for 12 months, October 2023 through October 2024 - Two employees will be hired as Scanning Technicians/ Artists who will alternate 30 hours one week; 40 hours 2nd week. Various sites across Arizona; traveling required. Eligible for Garden benefits.


      In an upcoming exhibition, Desert Botanical Garden will present the artwork installations of artist group ScanLAB Projects. Due to the time-based nature of the artwork and data to be collected, one full year of daily scanning will take place ahead of that exhibition. These Scanning Technicians will report directly to the Garden and be in communication with the ScanLAB team. As part of a two-person team, Scanning Technicians will rotate their schedule with each other to ensure 365 day coverage and scanning completion.

      Position Purpose

      Work on a project between Desert Botanical Garden and ScanLAB Projects to produce a 3D time-lapse scanned multi-screen art installation called Desert Pulse to be installed within the Desert Botanical Garden. The purpose of this role is to document a series of local sites using LiDAR scanning technology over a 12 month period. This requires visiting a series of spots to perform a 3D scan using specialist equipment and take color photographs.

      ScanLAB Projects is a creative studio, based in the UK, that works in pioneering 3D LiDAR scanning technology to create artworks, VR, installations, films and broadcast tv. The studio most recently produced the critically acclaimed immersive art installation, FRAMERATE: Pulse of the Earth that has been exhibited at La Biennale, SXW, PHI Centre in Montreal and more. www.scanlabprojects.co.uk


      The Desert Botanical Garden has recently commissioned ScanLAB to produce their next ambitious work, a 3D time-lapse scanned multi-screen art installation called Desert Pulse that will be installed at the Garden in 2025.

      Position will be split between a 4 day a week (40 hours a week) and 3 day a week (30 hours a week) schedule with flexibility to coordinate daily shifts between them. Long term availability starting around mid-October for training and meeting with the ScanLAB team. Full-time scanning will begin approximately October 16th, 2023.


      Essential Duties

      • Document a series of local sites in 3D over a 12- month period.
      • Perform precise, high-resolution, daily scans of fascinating local spots, from the Verde River to the Salt River. Sites include riverside environments, a housing development, a pecan nut farm, desert scenes and various sites around the Garden itself. The locations are grouped in the East and North East of Phoenix. 3D scans will be performed using specialist equipment (training provided) and color photographs will also be taken in these locations.
      • Visit a series of spots EVERYDAY for a minimum of 12 months including weekends, holidays, in all weather and in steep, unstable terrain, including climbing steps and ladders. Work day may be up to 10 hours.
      • Some locations require use of appropriate PPE (hard hat, boots, hi-vis)


      Requirements

      • Interest in photography and the Arizona landscape.
      • Minimum of 3 years photography experience with the outdoors and knowledge of photography.
      • Ability to work outdoors for long periods of time, walking.
      • Significant driving.
      • Ability to work up to 10 hours a day.
      • Available starting middle October for training and meetings with the ScanLAB team. Full-time scanning will begin approximately October 16th , 2023.
      • Ability to drive for up to 3 hours a day excluding commute and have a valid Driver’s license
      • Access to transportation to arrive at electric vehicle charging location daily (electric vehicle will be provided for daily commutes and parked in a TBD location)
      • Ability to work with technology and computers.
      • Must be able to meet criteria of age 25 or older to drive a leased vehicle.
      • Ability to learn how to use new equipment.
      • Independent thinker with an ability to plan and problem solve.
      • Ability to walk over steep, unstable terrain or climb steps/ladders.
      • Ability to carry up to 50 pounds of scanning and photography equipment.
      • Initiative to work in all types of weather and alone.
      • No prior experience in 3D LiDAR scanning is required, scanning training will be provided.


      Equipment Used

      Specialized scanning and photography equipment provided by ScanLAB. Electric Vehicle provided. Typical office equipment utilized for sharing data and communication.

      Scope of Authority

      Review and enforce all locations under the directions of the Senior Director of Exhibits and Exhibits team.

      Internal Communication

      Frequent interaction with Exhibit Department employees and ScanLAB employees.

      External Communication

      Frequent interaction with representatives at various location sites.

      Working Conditions

      Physical effort beyond what is required in an office environment. Consistently works in outdoor weather conditions. Potential for tight deadlines. The noise level in the work environment is moderate.

      The person in this position needs to occasionally move about in uneven terrain. Occasionally ascends/descends a ladder to service the equipment.


      Must be able to walk, sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend, see, hear, speak, read and type. Manual dexterity and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds required. Must be able to handle technical equipment. The role works outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
