      The Role

      The position works as a trainee mental health clinician within the Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network (Justice Health NSW).



      The role is for an Aboriginal Mental Health Trainee Custodial Mental Health undertaking the Charles Sturt University Bachelor of Health Science (Mental Health). Under supervision, duties include mental health assessment, care planning and promotes the social and emotional well-being of Aboriginal people within the criminal justice and forensic mental health service settings.

      Must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent (N.B. applicants race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW).

      Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and have established links with their local Aboriginal community.

      Our location, team, and service

      Custodial Mental Health (CMH) is a specialist mental health service within Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network (the Network) that provides a range of mental health services to adults in NSW correctional centres.

      Custodial Mental Health is a specialist mental health team, which has mental health nurses (MHNs), nurse practitioners (NPs), Aboriginal Mental Health Clinicians, psychiatrists, career medical officers (CMOs), and psychiatry registrars who are supported by administrative and managerial staff. CMH clinicians work alongside staff from other Network clinical streams and CSNSW staff, including Psychology, Offender Services and Programs, and Custodial Operations staff in the provision of mental health services. Mental health services begin at the point of reception and continue through to release from custody or transfer to another correctional centre.

      1. Must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent (N.B. applicants race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW).
      2. Must be willing to provide Proof of Aboriginality with an endorsed common seal (preferably Local Aboriginal Lands Council) or an alternative recognised Aboriginal organisation.
      3. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and have established links with their local Aboriginal community.
      4. Demonstrated knowledge of current health issues relevant to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander communities.
      5. An understanding of the health needs of Aboriginal peoples in contact with the criminal justice system.
      6. Written and verbal communication skills to a standard to meet the academic entry level of university criteria and to undertake a University degree course.
      7. Willingness and commitment to undertake tertiary study towards the Bachelor of Health Science (Mental Health).
      8. Current unrestricted drivers' licence and the ability to maintain. Ability and willingness to drive/travel as the role requires. This may involve driving long distances.
