This includes our new student transition programing that welcomes, informs and connects new students to the SFU community. Our unit supports the academic mission of the university by helping new students in their transition into the institution, as well as supporting specific populations of students including Uggla Family Scholars.

      About the Role

      The Academic Advisor works in a developmental capacity with undergraduate students, including prospective and new students, undeclared students, and students in academic difficulty, and assists them in developing academic plans that support their academic, personal and career goals. The position advises on career options, reviews and recommends options available to students in academic difficulty, and refers students to appropriate resources available through other University departments, and in the broader community. The Academic Advisor works with students in crisis and handles confidential student information appropriately.

      Qualifications

      Bachelor's Degree and three years of related experience which includes staff supervision and training or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience.

      • Excellent knowledge of best practices in academic advising and relevant student development theories.
      • Excellent workshop facilitation, attention to detail, presentation, analytical and problem-solving skills.
      • Excellent intercultural competency skills, including an understanding of reconciliation and Indigenous history and ways of being and knowing.
