- Perform student academic advising for undergraduate students in the assigned programs by informing current, transfer, international and prospective students, as well as students minoring in the program, regarding all Faculty programs and services;
- Develop and review student program plans, including course selection and program/Faculty/University requirements;
- Manage advising appointments, both virtually and in-person, opening appointment times, and tracking student requests and inquires;
- Provide direction and guidance to students for who require support for various situations (e.g., crisis situations, issues with professors, performance concerns, etc.);
- Identify needs for course over-rides and provide appropriate decision maker with required information to review and make determination;
- Maintain strong knowledge of academic calendar, academic regulations, Faculty Handbook and other policies, timelines and important dates as needed;
- Perform degree audits and program adjudication at required times, making decisions and/or seeking approvals;
- Participate in classroom presentations and orientation sessions to support students success as related to advising;
- Attend student recruitment events including the Ontario Universities' Fair, Fall Preview Day, Spring Open House, and others as needed representing the assigned programs and/or Faculty;
- Provide insight to the Department (for proposals having major impact to the program modifications, curriculum planning, Undergraduate Program Committee (UPC) submissions, articulation agreements, college transfers;
- Participate in an contribute to department/faculty-wide meetings, departmental committees, other sub-committee meetings, or retreats as requested.
- An undergraduate degree in a relevant field;
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience with academic advising in a post-secondary environment;
- Understanding of the undergraduate course calendar, course offerings, prerequisites and class scheduling for the Department/Faculty;
- Knowledge of University programs, services, systems, and administrative functions (e.g. Admissions, International Exchanges, Student Records);
- Knowledge of computer software and systems including MS Office and contemporary with spreadsheets, word processing, database applications, CRMs, email and web applications;
- Strong active listening, verbal, written and interpersonal skills;
- Maintain self-motivation with the ability to work well independently, as well as collaboratively;
- Ability to coach, mentor, and motivate students;
- Excellent creative problem solving, organizational and multi-tasking skills;
- Adaptability and the ability to learn quickly and apply new knowledge.
- Master’s degree.
- Job Grade (K), Salary Scale ($54,348 - $73,171)*;

The Academic Advisor reports to the Chair, Child and Youth Studies in the Child and Youth Studies/Faculty of Social Sciences Department. This individual is responsible for providing high quality advising on academic program requirements and monitoring academic progress of students in the assigned undergraduate programs. This includes potential domestic students, transfer students, international students, exchange students, students completing a minor in the program and changing their major. The Academic Advisor is also responsible for conducing degree audits, coordinating LOP applications and transfer credits, supporting events and recruitment initiatives, supporting readmissions, and adjudicating and monitoring the registration system. The students being advised are from diverse, intersectional backgrounds and staying current on approaches to work across diverse populations is critical.
