      Job Title: Accountant I

      Reports To: Assistant Controller

      Salary Grade: NE40

      Effective Date: March 2017

      Position Summary: Monitors general ledger and various financial records to ensure accurate daily processing and recording of negotiable instruments, electronic transactions, loan production, teller entries, and investment activities. Prepares journal entries to post settlements, adjustments, and periodic transactions to general ledger. Reviews invoices and employee expense reports for accuracy and creates accounts payable transactions. Processes checks and electronic payments. Conducts formal reconciliations of general ledger asset and liability accounts. Carries out wire transfers, prepares reports, and performs other duties as assigned in support of the operations of the Finance Department.

      Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

      • Organizes and balances daily items processing work from branches and departments. Inputs money orders, traveler’s checks, and savings bond applications into databases as needed. Tracks and posts foreign cash item collections. Reconciles ATM activity to general ledger daily. Prepares remittance reports for items processing work.

      • Obtains reports of daily Visa purchases, cash advances, payments, unposted items, and adjustments. Performs daily reconciliations of Visa credit and debit card account activity and prepares general ledger journal entries to record Visa settlement transactions. Verifies accuracy of daily settlement funds transfers.

      • Collects and organizes invoices and verifies for accuracy. Maintains an awareness of vendor activity and alertness to inconsistencies that may signal errors. Obtains proper authorizations and reviews expense classifications to properly record expenses. Posts to expense, accrued expense, or prepaid expense accounts within the accounts payable system. Generates and remits checks and creates vendor payment ACH files. Scans, indexes, and reviews invoices, expense reports, and other documents in adherence to Credit Union record retention policy.

      • Completes monthly reconciliations of assigned general ledger asset and liability accounts. Uses system reports and various service-provider statements to research and resolve outstanding items. Works closely with other departments, financial institutions, and third-party processors to resolve outstanding items.

      • Initiates and verifies outgoing domestic wire transfers and outgoing foreign cables. Assists in retrieving incoming wire transfers and prepares posting vouchers.

      • Compiles statistical information and prepares reports as outlined by Credit Union management or required by correspondents, regulators, auditors, and the U.S. Census Bureau.

      • Recommends changes to improve processes and resolve recurring variances.

      • Completes other tasks and special projects as assigned. Works with department members to ensure all departmental duties and goals are met.

      Education and/or Experience:

      Associates Degree and two to three years’ experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

      Performance Standards:

      Requires an in-depth understanding of general accounting principles as well as reconciling and problem-solving techniques. Must be well versed in financial industry practices and terminology. Communicates professionally and courteously with internal and external business stakeholders. Uses sound judgment to determine action to be taken within the limits of standard practice, adhering to Credit Union policies and procedures in all areas of responsibility.

      Language Skills:

      Ability to read, analyze, and interpret vendor contracts, business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write business correspondence, procedure manuals and create reports. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, members, and the general public.

      Mathematical Skills:

      Ability to work with mathematical concepts and perform cost analysis. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions and percentages.

      Reasoning Ability:

      Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
