- Assuming responsibility for departmental accounting records or assisting with a County-wide bookkeeping function such as payroll or accounts payable.
- Recording, balancing, and classifying all income and expenditures to proper accounts in accordance with BARS and County procedure.
- Preparing and reviewing entries and documents prepared by others to ensure accuracy, propriety, proper account coding, adequate explanations, and other applicable information in accordance with federal and state regulations.
- Reconciling accounts and adjusting irregularities.
- Training or consulting with other County staff in these functions and responding to questions.
- Auditing subsidiary journals, registers, and other original entries prepared by employees of lower classifications for accuracy and propriety.
- Developing and preparing departmental financial reports and budget.
- Assisting with or preparing County financial reports.
- Performing special projects requiring extensive research, interpretation, or auditing of statistical data.
- Reviewing various accounts, financial summaries, and statements to recommend improvements or revisions in the accounting system or its procedures.
- Assisting in directing the work of employees of lower classification; may assign and review completed work.
- Assisting in testing computer accounting programs used in the work unit.
- Providing clerical assistance as needed.
- High School Diploma or GED and one year of college level accounting courses. Additional experience may substitute for college level courses on a year-for-year basis.
- Two years of general accounting experience.
- Ability to utilize a personal computer and applicable software to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
- Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's license, or the ability to obtain a license within 30 days of employment, or otherwise meet the travel requirements of the position.
- Knowledge of the double-entry bookkeeping and governmental accounting principles and procedures.
- Knowledge of the BARS governmental accounting system.
- Knowledge of modern office methods and procedure and familiarity with the uses of standard office equipment.
- Ability to make arithmetic calculations rapidly and accurately.
- Ability to organize and prioritize accounting projects with minimal supervision.
- Ability to direct the work of other employees.
Thurston County is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the position of Accounting Assistant II within the Accounting and Budgeting Team of the Central Services Department.
The Accounting Assistant II prepares, maintains, and posts complex financial data to general ledgers, special ledgers, and other fiscal records. The incumbent in this position will reconcile accounts and prepare a variety of financial reports.

Working Conditions :
Work is generally performed indoors and in an office environment. May be required to deliver items and operate county vehicles.
