      Public Protection & Advocacy Bureau

      Insurance & Financial Services Division

      The Attorney General’s Office is looking for an Actuary to work in the Insurance & Financial Services Division (IFSD) which reviews insurance rate filings, litigates administrative insurance rate cases, provides consumer assistance, analyzes data regarding financial services issues and practices, and enforces laws regarding insurance, investment, and lending.

      Primary Duties: Review individual insurance company and industrywide rate filings for various lines of insurance, including private passenger auto, commercial auto, homeowners, and workers’ compensation, and evaluate the support for rate changes proposed by insurers. Participate in insurance rate proceedings, including reviewing and analyzing insurance rate filings, identifying rating issues, assisting attorneys in cross-examination of witnesses, and assisting with the preparation of discovery and testimony. The actuary will have the opportunity to give testimony in administrative rate cases themselves but is not required to do so. Other primary duties include performing market-wide studies on overall rates, including evaluating the effects on low-income and minority population areas with respect to accessibility and affordability, providing technical analysis and support to IFSD investigations, including those relating to securitizations, lending, and investments, and other matters, and educating attorneys regarding various actuarial and mathematical issues.

      Position Type & Schedule: This is a Full-Time/Exempt position. Our hybrid model includes some telework days each week for most positions.

      Salary: $120,000, based on experience.

      Position Requirements: Associate of the Casualty Actuarial Society (ACAS) or Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS) credentials with over five years actuarial experience in the property and casualty industry. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a connection to the people and communities we serve, including historically marginalized communities, and an interest in supporting a respectful and inclusive work environment. Applicants must have proficiency with data analysis and data analytic tools, be highly motivated, intellectually curious, and able to quickly learn new and complicated subject areas. Attentiveness to detail is a must. Familiarity with the financial services industry, including mortgages, student lending, and auto loans is a plus, as is prior interaction with insurance regulators or familiarity with insurance regulatory rate processes. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel is required. Applicants must be comfortable working autonomously, but also as part of a team.
