Minimum of 15-hours per week of application reading between December, 2023 and Mid-March, 2024. Reading may begin as early as October, 2023.
Attendance at mandatory Application Review Conference
A computer and access to a reliable, high-speed internet connection in a private, secure location
Any necessary office supplies
The Application Reader plays a critical role in helping the undergraduate admission staff holistically review a large and diverse applicant pool with care, optimism and integrity.
In keeping with a holistic evaluation philosophy, the reader will be responsible for reviewing high school transcripts, personal essays, recommendation letters and other application materials, considering them in the context of each students’ life experiences and background, and submitting thorough and detailed evaluation notes.
Attend Oct. 30 conference and complete required preparation meetings and modules.
Read at a pace that allows for the completion of a weekly target number of applications between December and mid-March, with a short break during the holiday period. The number of hours required and the number of files to be read may vary slightly depending on the month, with December through February experiencing the highest volume.
Maintain communication with the Admissions office to review evaluation notes and processes in accordance with reading expectations.
Participate in periodic virtual reader meetings. Application Readers will work with Admissions Office staff through our comprehensive holistic reading process.
A bachelor's degree is required.
Must have experience working in a relevant field such as admissions, Community-based organizations, college counseling, higher education marketing/communications. Direct experience in selective college admissions is highly desirable.
Well-developed computer skills and the ability to adapt to new technology are crucial.
Must be able to meet specific deadlines and read a large volume of files under time constraint.
Possess keen analytical skills and concise writing ability.

Washington and Lee University is seeking Application Readers for the 2023-24 undergraduate admission application reading season. The Application Reader is expected to commit to a minimum of 15 hours per week to review first year applications. All applications are read online.

Application Review Conference: The Admissions Department will host a one-day meeting on Monday, October 30 for members of the department and Application Readers to review application reading objectives and class priorities. Training will be provided in usage of relevant systems. Accommodation and travel expenses will be reimbursed for on-campus attendance. Zoom conference attendance may be available.
Pay: $30.00 per hour, to be invoiced monthly according to services provided
