      Position Summary:

      The Center for Research & Health Promotion augments SYH’s clinical care with health promotion, research and care coordination programs for patients and community members. Under the direct supervision of the Program Supervisor, the Adolescent Wellness Health Educator will be responsible for providing health education, outreach and social media and marketing related duties to specified programs. General responsibilities will be, but are not limited to, leading social media team, creating social media and collateral content, coordinating the implementation and delivery of health education and conducting presentations, as well as other specified health education duties.

      This specific Adolescent Wellness Health Educator position will be assigned to SYH’s adolescent health programs such as school-based health education, sexual health education programs, health education programs aimed to increase access and information to adolescents regarding health. The Health Educator will provide one on one and/or group-based health education to adolescents regarding healthy relationships, substance abuse and sexual and reproductive health. The Health Educator will have primary responsibility for delivering a minimum of 3 group classes per week, provide clinic based education & outreach up to 16 hours a week, leading social media team, creating marketing flyers and presentations, and assisting in recruitment of participants, and complete all data collection activities.

      Essential Functions of the Job:

      • Assist in the development and implementation of group based and one on one clinic-based curriculum
      • Receive certification in HIV skills testing and Family Planning Health Worker
      • Lead social media team to determine weekly plan for Teen Clinic and Adolescent Health promotion
      • Create content using Canva or other platforms/programs to promote teen friendly services
      • Fill out and be responsible for keeping logs and numbers of all participants in the education classes and outreach activities
      • Conduct outreach as needed for the Health Education Department
      • Attend Community Meetings as requested by Supervisor
      • Report and meet with the Supervisor as needed
      • Serve as a liaison between the community and the health center
      • Conduct activities that will contribute to the promotion of healthy lifestyles
      • Conduct self in a professional and positive manner in all clinic and community related activities

      Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

      • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards
      • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops
      • Maintains program specific records as required; submit reports, including activity, contact and mileage reports in accordance with agency policies and procedures
      • Attends meetings and/or training sessions as required and participates on committees as directed
      • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested

      Job Requirements


      Education and Experience Required:

      • High School Diploma or GED equivalent and minimum of 2 years of experience providing health education in group and/or individual settings
      • Or any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Examples of qualifying experience include:
        • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in a health related field and 1 year of health education experience.
        • 2 years in a position comparable to Health Educator in a community, clinic, or school-based setting.
        • Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.

      Education and Experience Preferred:

      • Bachelor’s Degree in Health Education, Social Work, Psychology or related field
      • Experience providing one-on-one health education and delivering presentations in a group setting

      Certifications Required:

      • Valid CA Driver’s license and insurance
      • Regular & reliable access to personal vehicle

      Verbal and Written Skills Required to Perform the Job:

      • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills.
      • Must maintain confidentiality at all levels.
      • Bilingual English/Spanish

      Technical Knowledge and Skills Required to Perform the Job:

      • Familiarity with and knowledge of community resources and their use to meet the needs of families
      • Ability to establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships
      • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
      • Medical Assistant experience and certification highly desirable

      Equipment Used:

      • General office equipment to include Computers, phones, copy machines, fax machines, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)

      Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

      • This position is intended to be a hybrid role, where the incumbent will be expected to work “On-Site” two days per week.
      • Prolonged sitting position
      • Frequent walking and standing at outreach events
      • Traveling within Central and South San Diego
      • May be required to work evening and/or weekend hours

      Universal Requirements:
