      This open competitive advertisement is for a Career Service position located at Holmes Correctional Institution in the Education department. This position is for an Adult Basic Education/GED® Instructor responsible for delivery of instruction in Math/Science, Reading-Language Arts and Social Studies through a blended instructional model.

      The mission of the Bureau of Education at the Florida Department of Corrections is to provide comprehensive educational programs and services to inmates. Their goal is to enhance inmates' academic, vocational, and life skills, thereby promoting personal development and successful reintegration into society. By offering quality education and training, they aim to reduce recidivism and support inmates in becoming productive, law-abiding citizens.

      This position is not a telework position and is required to report to the FDC office in the area it serves.

      JOB DUTIES:

      The incumbent in this position is responsible for teaching assigned academic subjects to students at a correctional institution/facility. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

      • Plan, develop, and conduct classes in assigned subjects, utilizing various teaching techniques to assist student advancement.
      • Supervise inmates in the class, conduct roll calls, counts, and maintain attendance records.
      • Ensure order and discipline in the classroom, continually evaluate student progress, and administer grades and tests.
      • Counsel and advise individuals on program progress, behavior, or personal concerns.
      • Participate in staff meetings, seminars, and workshops for curriculum changes and professional development, and assist in budget preparation and purchase requests for the education program.

      Salary Incentives:

      • Applicants in possession of a master’s degree (official transcripts) may be eligible for an additional $1,499.94 annually.

      • A bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college/university; and
      • Possess or be eligible to apply for a State of Florida Educator's Certificate.
        • SPECIAL NOTE: Non-certified applicants must obtain a temporary State of Florida Educator’s Certificate within 12 months of hire. State of Florida Educator’s Professional Certificate must be obtained prior to the expiration of Temporary Certificate.

      BACKGROUND SCREENING REQUIREMENT

      The Florida Department of Corrections requires all job applicants and volunteers to pass a Level 2 background check as per Chapter 435, Florida Statutes. This check must be completed before they can start working or volunteering.
