  Westmead Hospital is a key facility of one of Australia’s largest major health and medical research precincts and is the principal referral hospital for Western Sydney Local Health District providing district level health services to Cumberland, Parramatta and The Hills Shire LGAs including tertiary and quaternary services to greater Western Sydney, greater metropolitan Sydney, rural NSW and other states. The Westmead Health Precinct currently under development is envisaged to be the largest hospital building project undertaken in Western Sydney and will transform the iconic but ageing Westmead Hospital into an innovative, contemporary, and integrated centre that will continue to deliver high quality healthcare and expand the education, health, and research capability of the area.
  Westmead Hospital is a leading centre of research, training and specialisation in all fields of Medicine and Dentistry, providing services in Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Kidney and Pancreas transplantation, Cancer Care, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Neonatal Intensive Care, Trauma, Bone Marrow Transplantation, Critical Care, Aged Care and Rehabilitation, Adult Acute Psychiatry (networked with the co-located Cumberland Hospital) as well as other specialised medical and surgical services.
  Westmead Hospital is also the principal referral centre for other metropolitan hospitals within the district including Auburn Hospital, Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospital.
  The Geriatric Medicine Department at Westmead Hospital provides a range of emergency, inpatient and outpatient services for patients who are 70 years or above presenting with wide range of clinical conditions usually on a background of multiple medical comorbidities and psychosocial issues. Comprehensive geriatric assessments are conducted by multidisciplinary teams in acute, subacute, community and residential aged care settings. HOPE which stands for Healthcare for Older Persons Earlier is a geriatric admissions and short-stay unit that provides acute assessment of elderly patients presenting to emergency. There are also dedicated services for stroke, falls and syncope, cognitive disorders, rehabilitation, orthogeriatrics, elderly trauma, perioperative care and aged care psychiatry. The department provides 24/7 assessment, intravenous thrombolysis and intra-arterial clot retrieval treatment to acute stroke presentations. Stroke patients are provided multidisciplinary care within the specialized acute stroke unit.
  
  
  What you'll be doing
  • Trainees will be responsible for day to day patient care and for maintaining close liaison with the attending consultant medical officer. Patients will be managed in the various inpatient, outpatient and community- based programmes that offer interdisciplinary care. Patient assessments will be conducted face-to-face as well as via telehealth and documented using electronic medical records. Trainees will work collaboratively with allied health clinicians. Trainees will participate in multidisciplinary case conferences, family meetings and NCAT guardianship hearings.
  • This position offers exposure to acute stroke medicine. There will be opportunity to work in the acute stroke unit, in stroke rehabilitation and attend weekly stroke education meetings. Trainees will participate in the afterhours stroke oncall roster. This role involves assessment of patients presenting with suspected stroke, review of cerebral imaging studies, administration of intravenous thrombolysis and coordination of intra-arterial clot retrieval procedures provided by interventional neuroradiologists. Supervision and formal training will be provided by consultant geriatricians and neurologists.
  • Trainees also have the opportunity to undertake a term in psychogeriatrics in both inpatient and outpatient settings under the supervision of psychogeriatricians.
  • Trainees will participate in teaching programs and quality improvement activities of the Geriatrics Medicine Department and the Division of Medicine. They will also provide education and supervision to medical students and junior medical officers.
  • Trainees afterhours responsibilities include stroke oncall, ward medical registrar duty, weekend geriatrics wardrounds and evening ED admitting geriatric registrar (HOPE-ED) shifts.

  The Training Program
  Advanced training in Geriatric Medicine constitute 24 months of core training and 12 months of non-core training. Trainees will gain knowledge in the physiology, medical and psychosocial aspects of aging, and also understanding in the Australian health and aged care systems for older people. There will be experience and training in ambulatory and sub-acute geriatrics. Opportunities exists to pursue subspecialty interests including stroke, neurodegenerative disorders, falls, orthogeriatrics and perioperative medicine.
  The Training Network
  Westmead Hospital provides accredited core and non-core training in geriatric medicine for up to 24 months. This position does not involve secondment.
  Training Opportunities
  The objective of this training position is to provide a wide experience and training in the specialty of Geriatric Medicine. While the basis of this training is clinical, there is opportunity also to gain experience in the organisational aspects of the specialty.
  Trainees will rotate through the following terms:
  Acute and emergency geriatrics
  Stroke and acute geriatrics
  Geriatric rehabilitation
  Community geriatrics
  Psychogeriatrics
  Surgical liaison and orthogeriatrics
  Knowledge in patient safety and quality is obtained though participation in department morbidity and mortality reviews and critical incidents investigations.
  Leadership and management capabilities are developed through supervision of junior doctors, involvement in hospital and college trainee committees and coordination of departmental educational meetings and registrars’ rosters.
  The advanced trainee project allow trainees to develop skills in research.
  SELECTION CRITERIA
  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category
  2. Sufficient clinical experience in order to undertake the clinical duties of the role in a variety of clinical settings and proficiency in basic and advanced life support. This includes completion of at least four postgraduate years and successful completion of the examination requirements of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and be eligible to undertake subspecialty training in Geriatric Medicine in Australia. Candidates who have completed FRACP part 1 (Written exam) and working towards completion of CRACP part 2 (clinical exam) will be considered for unaccredited advanced training
  3. Advanced ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team in the planning, delivery and coordination of patient care.
  4. Advanced communication skills, including the ability to convey, and adapt verbal and written information to a clinical and non-clinical audience
  5. Advanced good organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
  7. Advanced - clinical skills and judgement, with the ability to make sound decisions and problem solve with an awareness of limitations and ability to learn independently and modify behaviour accordingly.
  8. Previous experience in and willingness to deliver undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and training.
