About the Office of Academic Diversity Initiatives

The Office of Academic Diversity Initiatives (OADI) at Cornell University serves as a centralized hub that provides academic and professional development support and resources for undergraduate students who are traditionally underrepresented and/or underserved in higher education. OADI’s mission is to empower students to develop and leverage their own academic agency as they seek to achieve their scholastic, professional, and personal goals.

New York State (NYS) established the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) for its residents in 1986 with the purpose of increasing participation of historically underrepresented groups and/or low-income student pursuing professional licensure (e.g., medicine, law, social work, interior design) and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and health-related fields. Cornell University created a mirror program for non-NYS students called the Cornell Professional Opportunity Program (CPOP). Cornell merged CSTEP and CPOP into one program, the Pre Professional Programs (P3) which is housed under the division of Undergraduate Education in the OADI.

The Arthur O. Eve Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) and the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) were established in 1967 and 1969 to help facilitate students whose financial and academic environments have not allowed their potential to come to fruition. Cornell has hosted these programs since their start with the mission of “any person, any study” being central to opportunity and access.
