      The advocacy in t ernship at Autism Speaks provides a hands-on opportun i ty to a s tudent who resides in Washing t on, D.C. or A tla n ta, Georgia who is in t eres ted in exploring a career in nonp r ofit s. They will learn about federal and s tate public policy that affec ts the au t i sm community as well as gra ssroo ts mobilization programming, working clos ely wi th the advocacy t eam. ( For additional inform a tion on our advoca cy priorit ies and programming, visit au tismspeaks.org/advocacy). This is a 1 0 - 1 2-week program and s tuden ts must be eligible f or academic credi t. If based in DC, they will work out of our new DC office location (with possibility of some hybrid options). If based in Atlanta, they will work remotely, but will be in cons tant co mmunication wi th the ad v ocacy team and should plan to meet their supervisor in-person on at least two occasions.

      PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
      • Coordinating our general grassroots advocacy and communication efforts
      • Tracking o ur media e ngag e ment and volunteer advocates’ activ ity.
      • Assist in preparation of gr assro ots p r o gra mming, incl u ding o ur Adv ocacy Foru m, ad vocate trainings or c om m unity webinars.
      • Researching legislative issues and drafting o n e-pagers or articles related to autis m.
      • Attending Capitol Hill heari ngs and briefings and mee tings with other g o vern mental agencies.
      • Coordinating and building relatio nships with other nonprofits, ad v ocates and key stakeholders.
      • Assisting with dai ly office tasks.
      • Other tasks as assi gned.
      QUA L I FI C A T IO N S :
      S t udent in t erns must receive academic credit (i.e. grad uate or un der-graduate) spons ored by an accredited ins tit u tion or require experience for a cer tifica tion for a college deg ree.

      Backgr o und in p olitical scie nce, public p olicy or c ommunicatio ns preferred
      P roficient in Micr o s oft Office 365 (specifically Outl o o k, W ord, Excel and P owe r Poin t)
      Experience posting on social media platform s: Facebo ok, Twitter and Instagram
      Stro ng organizatio nal skills and attenti on to detail
      Experience with or ability to quickly learn CRM and advocacy software (StratusLIVE, Quorum and Phone2Action)
      Good oral and written c om m unicati on skills
      Stro ng interperso nal skills with a customer ser vice f o c us
      Ability to w ork independently as well as c ollaboratively w ith re m ote te am m e m bers
