      We have an exciting opportunity for a Aerospace Textile Engineer to join our team with the Engineering Division.

      The Aerospace Textile Engineer will:

      • Conduct research to develop or improve high-performance fabrics and smart textiles for specific projects in the space programs (i. e. lunar dust mitigation, logistics reduction.)
      • Develop expertise on the behavior of textiles in unique environmental and atmospheric conditions.
      • Plan testing of textile materials alone, or as component of hardware and subsystems for various projects to evaluate these textiles and make recommendation.
      • Select or recommend textiles for various space hardware exposed to various environments (i. e. vacuum, oxygen rich atmospheres.)
        Become proficient at writing Statement of Work, Sole Source Justifications, and other types of government documents used at NASA.
      • Review and follow requirements documents including functional requirements and verification success criteria documents.
      • Be familiar with the Materials and Processes (M&P) engineering certification process.
      • Support NASA M&P engineers with respect to the evaluation and selection of textiles.
      • Write and present progress and final technical reports on assigned projects.
      • Communicate with US-based textile vendors for sourcing materials and following the latest development in the textile industry.
      • Review textile industry and academia research proposals.
      • Manage inventories of historical and new textiles.
      • Provide project managers with labor estimates for projected work.
      • Know to operate various textile testing instruments.
      • Perform other duties as required.

      Requisition Qualifications:

      This position has been posted at multiple levels. Depending on the candidate's experience, requirements, and business needs, we reserve the right to consider candidates at any level for which this position has been advertised.

      • Requires a bachelor's degree in Engineering and a minimum of 2 - 5 years of experience in the field or in a related area.
      • Knowledge of textile product development and processes ranging from fiber to finished goods production (man-made fibers and yarns formation, natural fibers spinning techniques, manufacturing woven, knitted, braided, and nonwoven textiles).
      • Experience in using textile testing standards (ASTM, AATCC, ISO Standards, etc.)
      • Knowledge of quality control systems in the supply chain.
      • Communications skills for preparing and presenting technical information such as test reports, conference papers, and journal articles to diverse audiences (technical, managerial, and education outreach audiences).
      • Familiarity with Microsoft Office products.
      • Ability to work collaboratively and independently in a multidisciplinary field.

      Requisition Preferences:

      • BS in Textile Engineering, Textile Technology, Materials Science or related field and 5 years of experience or MS in Textiles and 2 years of experience, preferably in a research and development environment.
      • Previous experience supporting aerospace projects/human space flight systems.

      Essential Functions

      Work Environment

      Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

      Physical Requirements

      Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).

      Equipment and Machines

      Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).

      Attendance

      Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
