      The South Shore Regional Centre for Education (SSRCE) practices the culturally responsive pedagogy approach in providing an inclusive, diverse, equitable, safe and healthy education that supports learning and success both personally and academically to the 59,000 residents of Lunenburg and Queens Counties, an area of 5,250 square kilometres and a total of 23 schools.

      Alternate Substitute Teacher (Permit)

      These positions are for those individuals who want experience teaching and have not completed a Bachelor of Education.

      Effective Dates: Immediately upon receipt of your permit to teach until the end of the 2023/2024 school year

      Position Status: Causal (as needed basis)

      Location: Lunenburg and Queens County, NS

      Deadline to apply: January 31, 2024

      Rate of Pay: $196.231 per day (as outlined in the Teacher's Provincial Agreement)

      The South Shore Regional Centre for Education has substitute assignments daily which could range anywhere between Lunenburg and Queens County. Alternate (Permit) Substitute teacher positions occur when a teacher is engaged on a day-to-day basis to take the place of a regular classroom teacher, and when a substitute teacher is not available, employed by the SSRCE who is on any type of paid leave. Alternate (Permit) Substitute teachers are paid two (2) weeks behind.

      REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

      • Bachelor's Degree in Math, Science, English, French, Business, Arts or related field

      • Qualify for a Permit to Teach

      • Experience working with children an asset

      • Satisfactory completion of the Child Abuse Register check

      • Satisfactory completion of the Criminal Records and Vulnerable Sector Checks

      SSRCE will provide you with all the information you will need to apply for a permit to teach.

      Apply now by completing the online profile and attaching a resume with three (3) references from your immediate supervisor's. (If you have email addresses or reference letters speeds up the process) REFERENCES ARE MANDATORY - APPLICATIONS WITHOUT REFERENCES WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.

      If you meet the above qualifications, you will be contacted by Human Resources at SSRCE to complete the Application for Permit to Teach. We will provide you with specific instructions on the process and the documents required.

      Once your application is processed you will receive a new hire employment package and Application for Permit to Teach. As part of this package, we will ask you to provide up to date Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector checks along with a Child Abuse Registry check; these must be within three months of hire date to be valid.

      Transcripts from all educational institutions will also be required as part of the application.

      This process takes about six weeks from the time the original documents are submitted to Human Resources.

      Applications will be reviewed every two to three weeks and only shortlisted applicants will be contacted.
