      Job summary

      We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic Ambulance Care Assistant to join our in-house transport team at Royal Brompton hospital in London & Harefield hospital in Middlesex. You must be a professional, caring and dedicated individual working Monday to Friday, providing the best possible care to our patients attending our specialist cardiac and respiratory services.

      Our patient transport services are in-sourced and you will be employed directly by Guy's & St. Thomas' NHS Foundation trust, working for Royal Brompton & Harefield hospitals NHS ambulance service, transporting patients nationally to attend essential specialist services.

      The candidates would transport our patients from Kent, Surrey, Hampshire or Berkshire areas.

      Main duties of the job

      The main duties of our Ambulance Care Assistants are:

      Transporting our patients to attend outpatient appointments, day case treatment, admissions, discharges and transfers between NHS hospitals nationally.

      Caring for frail and vulnerable patients, some require assistance with wheelchairs, both manual and electric.

      The role requires a professional and caring attitude.

      Communicate with patients, relatives, and the public in a calm, and professional caring manner, treating them with dignity and respect at all times, even in difficult or potentially hostile circumstances.

      Deliver clear, concise basic clinical information, within their scope of practice, to theHealth Care professional when handing over patients in relevant departments.

      Undertake risk assessment of patient safety, staff safety and public safety.

      Ensure vehicles and equipment are kept in a state of cleanliness and any defects are recorded and reported for action to be taken.

      Ensure that own personal practices in infection prevention and control meet the requirements of the hygiene code and health & safety at work; this will include cleaning of ambulance vehicles and equipment, maintaining cleanliness of vehicles and equipment, and promotion of good infection prevention and control standards.

      Ambulance Care Assistants are often seen as entry level opportunities, with Staff progressing into Technician Emergency Care Assistant positions.

      Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals are specialist Cardiac and Respiratory centres of excellence, that are part of Guy's & St. Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.

      From 1st April 2022, we in-sourced our ambulance transport services and you will joining the ambulance transport family that consists of a small team of transport administrators, controllers, ambulance care assistants and emergency technician assistants, that serve our patients 7 days a week.

      Job responsibilities

      Complete all relevant operational documentation and carry out daily routine vehicle checks.

      Physically manoeuvre and / or lift patients, including the use of supplied carrying aids, in circumstances where patients are unable to manage alone, after undertaking a manual handling risk assessment e.g. up and down stairs and within restricted spaces.

      Maintain an appropriate level of care for patients, relevant to their condition. This includes recognition of when additional skills or support may be needed.

      Assist patients in their homes, both prior to and after transportation, ensuring they have their basic needs catered for and their homes are safe. This includes measuring, highlighting and reporting areas of risk in line with Essentias risk assessment procedures.

      Adhere to Trust policy in respect of the control of confidential information as outlined within the data protection act and the Caldicott principles.

      Ensure that patients are taken to and collected from the agreed treatment area within the hospital or centre in a timely basis.

      Maintain the vehicle in a sanitary condition in line with Infection and Prevention Control policies and health & safety and clinical waste management.

      Provide any clinical assistance to the authorised level of competence in all circumstances that require it.

      Participate in equipment trials, working parties and highlighting areas of potential personal and organisation service development.

      Drive a range of vehicles in a manner appropriate to the patients condition and in accordance with Trust approved training criteria.

      • Level 2 Diploma including Essential/Key/Core Skills at Level 2 in Application of Number and Communication or 5 GCSEs at grade C or above including Mathematics/Numeracy, English and combined Sciences or any single Science.
      • Full Clean driving licence UK Driving licence (manual)

      Desirable

      • Willingness and ability to complete a Certificate in Ambulance Patient Care (acquired post entry)
