      Brunswick County Public Utility is currently accepting applications for an AMI Meter Technician to join our Water Distribution team. Brunswick County Public Utility provides water and wastewater (sewer) services to roughly 58,000 metered customers across a large service area. Our Public Utility team is committed to the community and takes a lot of pride in providing a high level of service to our customers every day.

      The AMI Meter Technician works as part of a team and performs a variety of both technical and administrative tasks to assist in the upkeep of the Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI) system so that data from individual water meters can be collected electronically via radio communication. The AMI Meter Technician is responsible for helping to ensure that the AMI system operates at peak performance so that the utility can accurately and efficiently bill customers for water and sewer services. Work may include:
      • Installing and programming AMI meters and ensuring meters are working properly and responding to the system.
      • Performing troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of all AMI hardware and software processes.
      • Climbing ladders, lifting vault lids, and working in confined spaces.
      • Documenting work and maintaining records.
      • Creating work orders and providing meter information to field technicians, (i.e., meter location, status, reading, replacement, etc.).
      • Monitoring overall AMI system performance by reviewing alarms and meter communications and communicating information to appropriate personnel.
      • Running reports and analyzing data to evaluate system performance, assisting with the tracking of performance trends, and modifying protocols as necessary.
      • Assisting with the coordination and management of overall AMI system maintenance activities (both scheduled and unscheduled).

      The AMI Meter Technician reports to the Metering and Technology Specialist and is responsible for taking appropriate safety measures and following established safety policies and procedures while performing all work. This position will be placed on an on-call rotation (one week every 5-6 weeks) that requires a response to emergency calls both after hours and during inclement weather conditions.

      If you are a technically savvy analytical problem solver who enjoys a combination of working both indoors in the office and outside in the field, detail oriented and can use independent judgement and take initiative to get a job done, we’d love to hear from you!Associate degree in computer science, electronics, electrical engineering technology, business management, water technology, or related field; AND three (3) years of experience in advanced meter infrastructure, electrical, and/or radio-related work; OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

      • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, including Excel.
      • Familiarity or experience with one or more of the following: GIS, Field Logic Tools, work order software, and/or billing software (i.e., Muni-Link).
      • Experience with radio communication systems (preferably Sensus) highly desirable.
      • Valid NC or SC Driver License required.


      Physical Requirements
      Must be physically able to operate pump station equipment, personal computer, related office equipment, and motor vehicle. Must be able to exert a minimum of 100 pounds of force and/or up to 50 pounds of force more frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Physical demand requirements are for Medium Work. Ability to climb communications towers and water tanks carrying up to 50 pounds of equipment.
