      PRIMARY FUNCTION

      The Animal Care Coordinator is responsible for supporting the proper functioning of the Animal Care Committee (ACC) and assisting ACC members in fulfilling their responsibilities.

      The Animal Care Coordinator provides administrative support to the ACC for protocol management, committee minutes and reports, other program documents (e.g., standard operating procedures and policies), and to protocol authors.

      The Coordinator often acts as a liaison between protocol authors and the ACC, between the senior administration and the ACC, as well as between the ACC and subcommittees (if any) and other stakeholders.

      As an integral member of the ACC, and in the absence of any real or perceived conflict of interest, the Coordinator is part of the Committee’s decision-making process.

      As the only permanent (ex-officio) member of the ACC, the Coordinator ensures continuity of ACC’s operations, maintains institutional memory, and is critical to successful onboarding and transitions of other members.

      EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

      • Bachelor’s degree in a closely related discipline with teaching or research experience with animals. Registered Veterinary Technologist designation preferred
      • Previous experience with animal care and animal-based research, teaching, and testing is required
      • Individuals with alternate combinations of education and experience (expertise in animal health and welfare; experience in animal research) should consider applying
      • Ability to work with a variety of animal species
      • Awareness of Occupational Health and Safety issues as it relates to animal research
      • In-depth knowledge of the regulations and guidelines governing research as well as detailed knowledge of applicable policies and SOPs

      QUALIFICATIONS

      • Familiarity with animal care and animal-based research, teaching, and testing;
      • Robust knowledge of policies, procedures and guidelines within the university as well as of externally-imposed requirements for animal-based research;
      • Highly motivated and creative to meet the challenges within a complex and dynamic university environment;
      • Knowledge of CCAC policies and guidelines is required;
      • Interpreting and communicating regulatory guidelines and policies with rare errors or omissions;
      • Ability to identify and create training sessions and workshops to share knowledge and learning;
      • Solid written, verbal, and multi-media communication skills to work credibly and effectively and respectfully with expert educators and world-class researchers;
      • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to exercise high level of tact and diplomacy in dealing with a wide range of contacts;
      • Demonstrated computer skills (including databases, Microsoft Office suite, Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Teams).
