      The Alamance County Sheriff's Office is now seeking applications for an Animal Control Officer. The Animal Control Officer is tasked with the responsibility of ensuring that citizens have access to animal control services while also upholding county ordinances and state laws. Even under the most trying circumstances, the Animal Control Officer is expected to demonstrate exceptional communication skills and conduct themselves in a professional manner while interacting with others. The primary purpose of this job is to conduct animal enforcement assignments required by the Office of the Sheriff.

      RESPONSIBILITIES:
      Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
      • Responds to calls for service involving domesticated animals and wildlife.
      • Obtains and maintains certifications applicable for the position.
      • Investigate alleged animal abuse and violations of County ordinances pertaining to animal care or behavior.
      • Reports to duty on time and have regular attendance.
      • Communicates with the public about animal welfare and animal control laws and regulations.
      • Maintains the confidence and trust of peers, superiors, and the general public.
      • Carries out any or all other duties as directed by the Sheriff or his designee.
      • Establishes post-bite quarantines visits to oversee quarantined animals.
      • Issues warnings and civil citations when appropriate.
      • Utilizes and maintains equipment such as catchpoles, traps, nets, and chemical capture devices.
      • Possess the ability to adjust to a fast-paced environment.
      • Operates an Animal Control Vehicle and all associated equipment.
      • Testifies in court, prepare the appropriate documents as needed.
      • Performs duties such as investigating reports of rabies, securing livestock, euthanizing animals (when necessary), and maintaining a comprehensive knowledge and awareness of animal laws/regulations.
      • Uses discretion effectively to determine a proper course of action consistent with the department’s mission and values.

      SKILLS & ABILITIES:
      Education & Experience:
      Minimum Qualifications:
      • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
      • Possess a valid North Carolina driver's license.
      • Must be able to successfully pass the following: Oral Interview, Background Check, Polygraph Examination and Drug
      Screening.

      Preferred Qualifications:
      Experience: One (1) year of experience with caring and handling of shelter animals and wildlife, including dogs, cats, livestock, racoons, and foxes.
      Computer Skills: Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint Experience)
      Work Schedule: This is an FLSA non-exempt, civilian position. The normal workweek is based on a schedule of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, forty (40) hours per week. The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Officers are required to be on an on-call rotation (one week per month) for after-hour calls.

      WORK ENVIRONMENT
      The Alamance County Animal Control Division is located within the Burlington Animal Shelter, which is located at 215 Stone Quarry Road, Haw River, NC 27258. The position does require working in inclement weather and within an office environment. There is continuous interaction with administration, supervisors, citizens, other law enforcement agencies, and all members of the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office.
