      The Animal Control Officer enforces state, county, and tribal animal control laws and ordinances. The incumbent provides a variety of animal control field services in New Pascua and at other Yaqui communities in Pima County.
      1. Enforce tribal and county animal control laws as stated in the intergovernmental agreement, governing such issues as dangerous and vicious animals, neglect, cruelty, excessive noise, quarantining, license, vaccination requirements, and bite incidents.
      2. Patrol the Pascua Yaqui Reservation to ensure compliance with PYT Animal Control Regulations.
      3. Respond to routine and emergency animal control calls.
      4. Assess reported or observed violations of animal control regulations, make determinations, take action on complaints, and issue citations.
      5. Provide field services including assist with animal vaccination clinics, capture domestic and wild animals, dispense first aid treatment to animals, examine injured and ill animals to select treatment disposition, and remove animals from a variety of hazardous situations.
      6. Provide information and education to the public covering a range of animal control topics including laws and ordinances, nutrition, behavior, injuries, and common diseases.
      7. Operate and provide safety, equipment checks of vehicle and use equipment such a snares, ropes, and traps in capturing animals.
      8. Testify in court on cases pertaining to animal control issues.
      9. Assist Tribal and County Law Enforcement Officers as required, prepare records and reports, and gather evidence including photographs for presentation in court.
      10. May perform animal euthanasia, as directed by qualified personnel.
      11. May prepare specimens for rabies analysis, may dispense medication to animals at direction of qualified personnel.
      12. May calculate and fees for animal quarantine, impounding and licensing services.
      13. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as requested by supervisor or director.
      Knowledge of:
      • Symptoms of common animal health problems;
      • Animal control care and handling;
      • Common animal species and their habits;
      • Reading street guides and maps;
      • Automated record keeping and the report generation;
      • Intergovernmental Agreement with the tribe;
      • Arizona, Pima County and Tribal regulations relevant to Animal Control;
      • Yaqui culture, customs, resources and traditions and/or a willingness to learn.

      Skills and Abilities:
      • Establish and maintain effective working relationships;
      • Prepare accurate records and reports;
      • Care of animals;
      • React quickly and calmly in emergencies;
      • Work under pressure;
      • Work on an on-call basis and holidays;
      • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
      • Operate a variety of office equipment, including a computer and related software applications;
      • Good communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisor, management, Council members, and the public. Have ability to sufficiently exchange or convey information and receive verbal and written work instructions.
      High School Diploma or GED and one (1) year of work experience in Law Enforcement, or related area: or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
      AND
      • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License.
      Special Requirements:
      • This position will require the incumbent to work non-traditional hours, nights, and weekends;
      • Must have a current Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card or be able to obtain the Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card within ninety (90) days of hire. Failure to maintain a current Level 1 Clearance Card will result in termination from this position.
