      Are you passionate about animal safety and responsible pet ownership? The Broomfield Police Department’s Animal Services Unit is seeking dedicated individuals to join our team. As an Animal Services Officer, you'll enforce local ordinances and support police personnel, while working with various departments, organizations, and the public to ensure the well-being of animals. Your role will be crucial in creating a safe and compassionate community through innovative and integrated services.

      Our selection process includes the following:

      Application review, phone screen, interview, Computer Voice Stress Analyzer, integrity interview, psychological suitability evaluation, background investigation, and physical/drug screen.

      • Respond to calls for assistance involving animals, specified animal-based ordinance complaints, and other incidents as required.

      • Contacts public to clarify applicable ordinances, refer party to appropriate organization, or achieve voluntary compliance. Enforcement of ordinances as necessary.

      • Handle animals in a humane manner, including lifting and transporting animals or bulky or heavy pieces of evidence and property (lift up to 80 pounds and drag up to 100 pounds).

      • Issue warnings or summons to individuals in violation of municipal animal service ordinances as appropriate, initiates necessary follow-up action.

      • Complete daily reports, which requires data entry on laptop and desktop computers.

      • Take photographs and testify in court as required.

      • Catch, contain, and impound animals-at-large. Including sick, injured, and vicious animals using specialized equipment, such as ketch poles, leashes, asps, Tasers, cages, and traps.

      • Give presentations to educate the public on animal care and behavior.

      • Uses all required safety equipment.

      • Without assistance, safely and humanely lifts animals weighing up to 80 pounds three feet off the ground and into cages in a vehicle. In some circumstances, the incumbent must drag up to 100 pounds.

      • Assist angry and/distraught citizens using effective communication, problem solving and mediation skills to resolve issues.

      • Simultaneously listen to and understand information from multiple sources, such as radio, telephone, computer screens, or other channels.

      • Accomplish all essential job duties while wearing a 5-pound duty belt.

      • Operate a motor vehicle under varying driving conditions while traveling to various locations within and outside Broomfield.

      Education:

      • High School Diploma/GED - required

      • 60 semester hours from an accredited college or university is preferred.

      Experience :

      • 2 years of experience in a municipal or county government to include dealing with the public in a compliance-type environment involving animal control techniques, reporting writing, issuing summons, community relations, and court procedures is preferred .

      Or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the Necessary Applicant Traits.


      NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

      Must be at least 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado Driver's license and safe driving record for continued employment. New hires must, as a condition of employment, pass the following pre-offer and post-offer processes: in-person or virtual interviews, CVSA, reference checks, background checks including local police check and sex-offender registry, medical examination, pre-psychological exam, drug screening and fingerprint check through CBI/FBI.

      • The incumbent occasionally works in high or precarious places and may be exposed to toxic or caustic fumes and vibration (while driving a motor vehicle).

      • The incumbent may be exposed to varied safety hazards, which range from vicious animals to traffic hazards encountered in traffic control.

      • The incumbent must be able to handle all types of animals and situations including impoundment, quarantine, euthanasia and carcass removal.

      • The noise level in the environment is moderately noisy.

      • Duties may include desk-related tasks in an office environment, patrolling in a vehicle, or assisting police personnel in the field.

      • This position involves working a variety of schedules, including weekends, holidays and evenings, and the incumbent is subject to work rotating shifts and beyond scheduled hours including emergency call in. The incumbent's schedule can be changed with little or no notice and mandatory overtime may be required with little or no advance notification.

      • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk or hear, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.

      • The employee is occasionally required to walk, stand, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, smell, and reach with hands and arms.

      • Physical demands are described as very heavy (handling demands that can exceed 100 lbs. occasionally, exert up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects).

      • Data entry and other tasks may require sitting at either a computer or in a motor vehicle for several hours.

      • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus, and peripheral vision.
