MASTERS LEVEL COUNSELING PRACTICUM AT
COMMUNITY COUNSELING CENTERS OF CHICAGO (C4)
SEXUAL TRAUMA AWARENESS AND RECOVERY SERVICES (STARS)
The Community Counseling Centers of Chicago (C4) Sexual Trauma Awareness and Recovery Services program provides counseling to adult survivors of sexual violence and their significant others. These services include crisis intervention, support groups, and individual short-term and long-term counseling.
Clients are typically female and racially diverse. Some clients seek counseling for a recent sexual assault or for an assault or assaults in the past. Others seek counseling for childhood sexual abuse and incest. The programs clients present with a variety of symptoms characteristic of anxiety, depressive, dissociative, or personality disorders, as well as PTSD.
A practicum student interested in this program must be female. She should be mature and have an interest in working in the movement of violence against women, with a focus on sexual violence. If she has an abuse history herself, this issue must be at a healthy state of resolution. Before beginning her practicum, she will be required to complete a 40-hour sexual assault counseling techniques training. These trainings are offered periodically at various rape crisis centers throughout Chicago.
As part of her practicum, she will co-facilitate two or more support groups, such as Artful Coping, Trauma Recovery and Empowerment (TREM), Incest Survivors, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). These groups are usually held in the evenings and meet once a week for 6-20 weeks. Also, she will provide individual counseling for clients who are survivors of sexual violence and/or their significant others.
A student may also be asked to conduct a workshop for other counseling professionals.
For this 1-year practicum, a student should expect to spend 20 hours per week at the site, including two evenings. As part of those hours, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon and evening shifts are required.
