      The Kraft Family Blood Donor Center’s Apheresis nurse practitioner (NP) serves as a key member of a multidisciplinary team to provide referring providers and researchers (internal and external, non-profit, and for-profit) access to blood/cellular products [e.g., hematopoietic stem cells (HPCs) and mononuclear cells (MNCs)] and therapeutic apheresis procedures.

      The NP can expect to have the unique opportunity to work collaboratively with Brigham and Women’s Hospital Transfusion Medicine physicians and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute physicians and research staff.

      The NP shall provide leadership and participation in selected organizational committees, councils, and initiatives related to the cell and gene therapy program at BWH and the immune effector cell therapy program at DFCI.

      The NP in the Apheresis Clinic will work a 40-hour work week, Monday-Friday in mainly an outpatient clinical setting with an adult patient population requiring apheresis and/or blood collection. Previous experience in transplant, oncology, apheresis, BMT, or research is highly desirable. The Apheresis NP provides assessment and therapeutic management of patient/family needs throughout the process of hematopoietic stem cell (HPC) collection and mononuclear cell (MNC) collection as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team. The Apheresis NP works in collaboration with the supervising physician, attending physicians, residents, fellows, and nursing staff within the team at the Kraft Family Blood Donor Center, as well as Dana-Farber Cancer Institute clinical and research staff. Following appropriate training within the Department, the NP is expected to manage patients that includes performing donor suitability assessments, obtaining medical histories, performing physical examinations, reviewing, and ordering laboratory tests, providing treatment, and coordinating follow up accordingly for the research patient population. The NP will educate patient/family on apheresis related topics. The NP will attend meetings to effectively enhance the clinical, consultation, education, and research services provided by the Center.

      The NP will perform in accordance with all state and federal regulations and institutional policies including but not limited to the BWH NP Scope of Practice, Prescriptive Guidelines, approved clinical privileges, and BWH PA policy. The NP is a licensed provider who has acquired a broad range of knowledge and skills through the successful completion of a nurse practitioner program.

      The NP is responsible for the assessment and management of various populations of patients, especially those with hematologic and other malignancies, and develop though patient evaluation and appropriate plans of care in relation to the clinical trial or study protocol. The nurse practitioner works under the supervision of an attending physician and reports directly to the nurse director in conjunction with administrative and medical directors.

      The NP shall be actively involved in ongoing quality improvement, maintaining safety, and compliance with regulatory standards such as those set forth by FACT, AABB, FDA, TJC, and NMDP.

      PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects, and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.

      Specific Responsibilities:

      • Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to a designated patient population in the ambulatory setting (DFCI/BWH Kraft Family Blood Donor Center).

      • Performs complete histories and physical examinations.

      • Evaluates and documents suitability of patients to undergo apheresis cellular collections.

      • Orders and oversees apheresis cellular collections and therapeutic apheresis procedures.

      • Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests.

      • Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings.

      • Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.

      • Consistently provides high quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes, and discharge summaries.

      • Practices cost effective medicine in an efficient manner, maximizing available resources.

      • Discusses patient data with other physicians and professionals as appropriate in a multidisciplinary setting.

      • Demonstrates expert clinical judgment skills to function in an independent role.

      • Review and determine feasibility, in collaboration with medical director and apheresis nursing, of new study protocols.

      • Assist with determining the complexity of new study protocols.

      • Review and provide input on documentation and workflows for Kraft clinical operations.

      • Communicate and collaborates with staff within Kraft and outside organizations in the establishing the optimal workflow.

      • Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests for the patient population in Kraft.

      • Assist with audits, quality, and compliance within Kraft.

      • Participates in departmental and organizational committees and programs as appropriate and attends all required meetings, in-services, and professional trainings.

      • Maintains superior interpersonal and communication skills as a member of the healthcare team to collaborate effectively with patients, families, staff at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, pharmaceutical companies, industry, and academic study sponsors.

      • Remains actively involved in continuing education with a commitment to self and departmental growth.

      • Adheres to all established safety policies, procedures, and precautions; identifies potential or actual unsafe situations in the environment and takes measures to rectify the situation.
