      The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation, is recruiting for an Archaeologist 1/2 in Anchorage.


      What You Will Be Doing:

      The incumbent’s primary responsibilities are focused on conducting archaeological survey, post field processing, and report writing. Responsibilities include literature research, field investigations, laboratory processing, artifact analysis, and report writing. Field investigations occur throughout Alaska in urban, rural, and remote locations, often under adverse weather and other environmental conditions. This fieldwork may include hiking long distances in difficult conditions with a field pack.


      Mission and Values/Culture:

      The mission of the Department of Natural Resources is to “develop, conserve and maximize the use of Alaska’s natural resources consistent with the public interest.” The Office of History and Archaeology (OHA) encourages the preservation and protection of Alaska's historic, prehistoric, and archaeological resources. This position in the Office of History and Archaeology is part of the core services of the Office, which include identifying, documenting, evaluating, and protecting archaeological and historic sites and buildings.

      The Working Environment You Can Expect:

      The duty station for the position is Anchorage, typically in State facilities. Field work includes traveling to and conducting field investigations in cities, towns, communities, and backcountry locations throughout Alaska. Field work is mostly concentrated during summer, though some projects in the off or side season may be needed.


      We are looking for a candidate who possesses the following position-specific competencies.

      • History and Archeology: Knowledge of historical events and their causes, indicators, and impact on particular civilizations and cultures, as well as preservation and archival techniques.
      • Sociology and Anthropology: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of group behavior and dynamics; societal trends and influences; and cultures, their history, migrations, ethnicity, and origins.
      • Research: Knowledge of the scientific principles, methods, and processes used to conduct a systematic and objective inquiry, including study design, collection, analysis, and interpretation of data, and the reporting of results.
      • Critical Thinking: Uses logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
      • Writing: Recognizes or uses correct English grammar, punctuation, and spelling; communicates information (for example, facts, ideas, or messages) in a brief, clear, and organized manner; produces written information, which may include technical material, that is appropriate for the intended audience.

      Minimum Qualifications

      Archaeologist 1 – Starting Salary $2123.25

      Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in archaeology or anthropology, and two field seasons, of at least two months duration each, in archaeology.

      Substitution: One year of graduate study at an accredited university in anthropology or archaeology may be substituted for one season of field experience.


      Archaeologist 2 – Starting Salary $2446.50

      Master's degree from an accredited college in archaeology, or anthropology with course emphasis in archaeology, including or supplemented by two field seasons experience, of at least two months duration each, in archaeology site location, identification and excavation. One field season must have been as a team supervisor.

      Substitution: Two years of professional archaeological research which included field experience, beyond the specified bachelor's degree, may be substituted for the required master's degree.

      If post-secondary education is required to meet the minimum qualifications, you must fill out the Education section of the application. If you have not obtained a degree, please indicate the units completed. Copies of transcripts are required to verify educational credentials if used to meet the minimum qualifications for a position.

      Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the minimum qualifications listed above. If utilizing this education, you must show that the education credentials have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials and that such education has been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs; or an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution reports the other institution as one whose transcript is given full value, or full value is given in subject areas applicable to the curricula at the post-secondary institution. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.

      Flexible Staffing

      This position is flexibly staffed. The level of the job offer will be based on the selected candidate’s eligibility. If hired at the lower level, you will be promoted to the higher-level job class after completing the training plan and meeting the minimum qualifications.
