      In addition to performance-based merit increases, this position is scheduled to receive salary range increases on the following dates:

      Effective June 27, 2025 - 4.00% increase

      RECRUITMENT/POSITION INFORMATION

      This recruitment is being held to establish an Open Eligible List to fill Sheriff's Department vacancies in this class, until the next recruitment.

      THE DIVISION

      The Training Division develops, schedules, and presents law enforcement training for sworn peace officers and professional staff. The Department utilizes two training sites to ensure the best learning environment possible, depending on the specific needs of the course. Advanced Officer Training (AOT) and Standards and Training for Corrections (STC) are primarily conducted at the Sandra Hutchens Regional Law Enforcement Training Center in Orange. Academy and entry level training is primarily conducted at the Sheriff's Regional Training Academy in Tustin. The Orange County Sheriff's Department, as well as multiple local, state and even federal public safety agencies train at and utilize both sites. Extensive input from law enforcement and other leaders throughout the county help to mold the curriculum and training that is offered. Multiple local, state, and federal public safety agencies regularly train at the Sandra Hutchens Regional Law Enforcement Training Center, which is often utilized seven days a week and includes daytime and evening instruction. Most training courses are provided in partnership with Santa Ana College.

      Firearms Training Unit The Firearms Training Unit (FTU) provides firearms training to members of various law enforcement agencies, primarily conducted at the Sandra Hutchens Regional Law Enforcement Training Center in the City of Orange. In addition to operating a full-time weapons armory, the FTU maintains three (3) permanent fixed ranges, including a state-of-the-art indoor tactical training range. Additionally, the FTU maintains two (2) Mobile Pistol Ranges (MPR) which allow for firearms qualification opportunities closer to employee work areas.

      The Opportunity

      The position serves as the Department Armorer and duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
      • Provide annual inspections of department issued duty gear, inspect over 2,000 department issued firearms and perform any needed repairs, ordering replacement firearms and parts, and maintaining the armory inventory of handguns, rifles, shotguns, and associated duty equipment.
      • Instruct law enforcement personnel in the safe handling and usage of firearms, marksmanship, and proper maintenance of firearms.

      Incumbents may be periodically rotated through shifts, including evenings, weekends, and work locations.

      THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

      Applicants that have Glock Handgun, Remington 870 Shotgun, and AR15 style rifle Armorer Certifications as well as Firearms Instructor Certification are highly desirable.

      PLEASE NOTE: Those who do not possess the certifications will be required to successfully pass the training within the first twelve months of employment. In addition to the above, the ideal candidate should demonstrate the following key competencies:
      • Ability to maintain and repair various firearms utilized by the department
      • Possess a strong work ethic with the ability to work independently and in a team environment
      • Solid background and knowledge of the fundamentals of marksmanship and firearms safety
      • Possess strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask
      • Effective communication skills - written and oral
      • Present ideas and complex material clearly, concisely, and logically both orally and in writing
      • Work effectively with various levels of the organization
      • Software proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook


      MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

      Education/Experience: Two years of experience which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge and abilities. Equivalent training may be substituted for up to six months of experience on an hour for hour basis.

      General Knowledge of:
      • Methods, materials, equipment and safety precautions used in the skilled maintenance, repair and testing of handguns, shotguns and other weapons and reloading and handling ammunition.
      • Methods of instructing others in the proficient and safe use of firearms and controlling the use of a firing range.
      • Methods of developing training material and/or providing individual and group instruction in a classroom setting.

      Ability to:
      • Perform skilled maintenance, repair and/or testing of a wide variety of handguns, shotguns and AR-15 style rifles, use hand and power tools (required for some positions).
      • Work independently with minimum instruction and without direct supervision. Understand and follow moderately complex written and oral instructions.
      • Maintain moderately complex activity or production and inventory records.
      • Add, subtract, multiply and divide four-digit numbers and fractions and decimals in order to maintain stock inventories and production records, calibrate weapons and compute shooting scores.
      • Instruct people of varying abilities and motivation in safe and proficient use of firearms.
      • Develop training materials for, and/or instruct, individuals and groups in a classroom setting (required for some positions).
      • Direct and train people with limited motivation, such as jail inmates, in performing semiskilled tasks.

      SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS A background check consisting of employment history, professional references, criminal check, and educational verification (i.e. degree, license, or official transcript) may be conducted. For positions with the Orange County Sheriff's Department and Probation Department, candidates must pass an extensive background investigation to the satisfaction of those departments.       Environmental Conditions: Incumbent will be required to work within an Armory, firing ranges, and mobile pistol ranges; may work outside in various weather conditions and on uneven ground; interact with people from outside law enforcement agencies, varying levels of organizational hierarchy and varying education levels.
