Summer Articling Student
The BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) offers interesting and varied articles at its Crown Counsel offices around the province. The BCPS is now hiring for temporary summer articled student positions starting in May 2024.
Under the guidance of Crown Counsel, students work on files relating to criminal prosecutions.
Students articling with BC Prosecution Service work closely with prosecutors in all aspects of trial work, both at the provincial and Supreme Court levels. Students may be asked to do legal research, assist in interviewing witnesses, appear at arraignment hearings, handle disclosure, and assist in the preparation of witness examinations and arguments. They will assume conduct of trials of summary conviction matters and bail hearings, and will often make other court appearances. Students may also be requested to assist in the preparation of appeals, either of summary conviction or indictable matters. Students will be exposed to all aspects of a prosecutor’s work, including providing advice to police during the course of an investigation, reviewing reports to Crown Counsel and assisting in charge approval.
There are six summer student positions that will lead to articles for 2025/2026, subject to satisfactory performance during the summer 2024 temporary articles, successful completion of law degree, including Canadian Evidence course, and subject to budgetary approval. Applications for articles not linked to summer positions are expected to be accepted from mid-January to late February 2024.
