      JOB SUMMARY:

      In conjunction with the OR Charge RN/Lead Surgical Tech, organizes the daily activities of the department including the physical environment, equipment, supplies, staffing, safety and quality of services both within the department and in cooperation with other departments. Works in conjunction with Administrator/Manager, Coordinators and Charge/Lead staff to ensure efficient, safe, quality-oriented patient care. Supports the philosophy and goals of OSS Health.

      QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION:

      Education:

      • Associate’s Degree in Nursing required. Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or health related field preferred.

      Qualifications:

      • Licensed and currently registered as a professional nurse in the State of Pennsylvania.
      • CPR certification required. CNOR, PALS and ACLS certifications required or the ability to achieve within one year.
      • Three years of nursing experience in the Operating Room area required, preferably within the last five years.
      • Demonstrated clinical competency and leadership experience.
      • Must demonstrate appropriate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the patient, as well as knowledge of current area of specialty nursing practices, techniques and procedures.
      • Must have the ability to effectively and efficiently make use of time and resources. Must be able to manage multiple, complex projects simultaneously. Must be able to plan, prioritize and organize work. Must be flexible.
      • Must be computer literate.
      • Must possess strong analytical and problem solving skills and the ability to work with large data sets. Ability to validate data, recognize and analyze trends and transfer that knowledge to a document that relays the information into a format that provides the critical points to leadership.
      • Professional and effective communication skills and the ability to promote effective communication at all levels required. Must actively promote teamwork and high quality customer care/services.
      • Must be able to resolve problems independently and make decisions according to current policies and procedures.
      • Must have the ability to function as a resource to all levels of nursing and unit personnel to provide optimal patient care.

      ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

      • Manages and directs nursing care in the OR. Plans staff assignments to assure adequate coverage and the proper mix of staff, revising as necessary. Coordinates flow of patients in OR. Manages patient assignments effectively. Communicates potential patient flow issues and patients’ condition with surgeon/anesthesia.
      • Assumes responsibility and accountability for care provided and documented by other licensed and unlicensed caregivers as appropriate. Reviews charts for performance improvement projects and follows up with staff when criteria in documentation is not met.
      • Maintains patient records as per requirements. Documents accurately and completely pertinent assessments, interventions, and outcomes for patients in accordance with the documentation standards, policies, procedures and/or guidelines.
      • Administers medications according to OSS standards, policies, procedures, and/or guidelines. Works collaboratively with the medical management team to identify and address patient change in condition.
      • Ensures the unit runs efficiently and as per AORN/Joint Commission and DOH standards and regulations. Assists with yearly DOH survey as well as Joint Commission survey processes.
      • Serves as a liaison between the perioperative leaders, ASC staff, Surgeons and Anesthesia.
      • Manages appropriate activities related to patient care and sets standards for accurate reporting and recording of patient’s symptoms, reactions and progress.
      • Provides nursing activities and standards to assist the leadership team in formulating patient care policy and procedures. Interprets policies and procedures. Provides leadership and direction in accordance with these policies and procedures. Works with the leadership team in planning and conducting staff meetings and in-services.
      • Works with the medical staff to coordinate medical and nursing management of patient care.
      • Communicates with patients, families, and health professionals regarding care.
      • Participates in nursing quality assurance program. Develops quality scorecards/dashboards for the departments. Participates in quality improvement initiatives. Practices principles of safety and infection control as defined by policy.
      • Maintains awareness of scheduled times to avoid delays and provide maximum efficiency. Assesses any changes, delays, or cancellations in daily schedule, working in conjunction with the OR surgery scheduler. Communicates those changes to all appropriate parties.
      • Assists in coordinating and covering for staff during lunches and breaks, working in the Operating Rooms when needed.
      • Assists with physician needs and resolves physician issues.
      • Promotes open communication to foster a positive cohesive work environment. Encourages a culture that promotes staff productivity. Utilizes interpersonal skills to facilitate communication and teamwork between departments, health care workers, patients and families.
      • Assists with administering practice drills and disaster plans with the Clinical Educator, ASC Administrator, COO, CNO, and safety officer.
      • Assists in maintaining adequate inventory of supplies, medications, and equipment.
      • Fosters professional growth and development of nursing staff.
      • Fosters effective public relations for the ASC.
      • Attends management meetings and appropriate in-services. Actively participates in required committees, meetings, etc.
      • Maintains skills as determined through yearly competency testing. Participates in ongoing educational activities through in-services, education days, self-study, or established educational programs. Remains involved with professional organizations and maintains clinical, managerial and administrative skills.
      • Keeps Administration informed of pertinent events and issues.
      • Analyzes and reports to leadership, on a monthly basis, and as needed, the operational budgets, capital budget, supply budget, and array of operational data including but not limited to utilization, turnover times, on-time starts, case cost, etc.
      • Monitors and assists ASC Administrator in performance against established financial benchmarks, provides accurate and timely financial reports, and makes recommendations for improvement in performance.
      • Ensures high customer satisfaction. Communicates and partners with Perioperative leadership to achieve improved operational and financial outcomes.
      • Responds to overhead pages immediately; carries spectralink phone.
      • Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
      • Other duties as assigned.

      SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

      Supervises Charge RNs, RNs, Lead RNs, Surgical Techs, MAs, Surgery Scheduler and Implant/Allograft Coordinator. Makes decisions and takes action essential to planning and operating the department.

      • Functions as a coach & mentor to the staff for whom this position is responsible.
      • Participates in and/or supports the employment process in conjunction with the Human Resources Department.
        • Submits requests for staffing needs on a thorough and timely basis, securing all necessary approval(s).
        • Participates in the screening/interviewing process, making self available to meet the candidates’ needs to expedite the screening process.
      • Participates in and/or supports the Orientation of newly hired staff members.
      • Provides and/or oversees the training of newly appointed staff members (to the department).
      • Develops and/or maintains on-going training programs/initiatives to enhance skills, knowledge and productivity of existing employees.
      • Participates in training sessions as required and/or deemed necessary.
      • Provides leadership and direction to the staff for whom responsible in order to maintain a work environment that promotes the creative development of ideas and allows employees to meet and/or exceed expectations and established standards of performance.
      • Monitors and measures performance of those staff reporting to this position. Addresses concerns or weaknesses and takes appropriate action to ensure issues are resolved. Ensures that staff are working as efficiently, as accurately and as productively as possible.
      • Ensures the compliance and/or oversees the compliance with all policies and procedures by staff. Recognizes exemplary compliance. Initiates appropriate corrective action in instances of noncompliance; secures required approvals before addressing with the staff.
      • Makes decisions and takes actions essential to the daily operation of the work area(s) for which responsible.
      • Maintains or oversees the maintenance of supplies deemed necessary for the efficient operation of the area(s) for which responsible.
      • Research major expenditures (including equipment, supplies and/or systems) and make recommendations to the appropriate member(s) of management for approval to purchase.

      LANGUAGE SKILLS:

      Must be proficient in the English language, both verbally and written, in order to communicate effectively with patients, co-workers, physicians, vendors, and the general public.

      PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

      Periods of sitting and standing. Moderate physical effort; standing, walking, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, stooping; occasionally lift and /or move 25 to 50 pounds. Must be able to respond quickly and effectively to an emergency. Manual dexterity to operate keyboard and other equipment; detail oriented; able to maintain a pleasant and courteous demeanor under all circumstances. Frequently works under pressure to meet deadlines or deal with problem situations.

      WORK ENVIRONMENT:

      Climate controlled environment with occasional periods of being outside. Exposed to blood borne pathogens, odorous chemicals and specimens, toxic chemicals, electrical and mechanical hazards, confused or combative patients, bio-contaminated waste, and unpleasant elements. Subject to stressful situations, long or irregular hours.
