      Under general supervision of Public Works Superintendent, performs a variety of asphalt road maintenance and construction duties. The Asphalt Truck Operator primarily operates light to medium equipment, drives a variety of heavy trucks to transport materials or equipment and are also required to perform labor duties required to assist the asphalt crew.

      Duties and Responsibilities:

      • Performs a variety of road & drainage maintenance including pothole patching, asphalt repairs, debris removal, and traffic signs

      • Operates light to medium construction equipment, including pick-up trucks, rollers, street sweepers, dump trucks, front end loaders, emulsion distributor, patch truck, crack sealer, and power tools, as required.

      • Performs construction duties including setting up traffic control, picking up/delivering hot asphalt, assist paving crew with various duties such as; shovel and raking, safely directing backing/dumping trucks into paver.

      • Performs routine daily maintenance including pre/post trip inspections, checking and filling fluids, report repairs, and cleaning work area, tools, and equipment

      • Handles road materials including asphalt, oils, gravel, limestone, and crack sealer material

      • Work in a team environment and assist co–workers or supervisors with other duties or responsibilities that may be assigned.

      Licensure:

      • Valid Texas Class “B” (CDL) commercial driver's license is required with Tanker Endorsement (CDL & Endorsement can be acquired within 120 days)

      Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

      • Must be proficient in multi-tasking to meet deadlines provided

      • Ability to document activities both written and electronic; able to utilize work order management system

      • Ability to work well with all levels of management, staff, and public

      • Knowledgeable of principles, methods, practices, materials, equipment, traffic control and tools used in road maintenance operations.

      Education:

      • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent from an accredited educational institution

      Experience:

      • 1 year of road maintenance experience is preferred

      Licensure:

      • Class "A" CDL preferred

      Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:

      • A regular full-time position, requiring the employee to work 40 hours per week. This may include weekends and holidays.

      Work Environment:

      • Work is on active construction sites involving pervasive hazards associated with heavy equipment and tool operations; speeding traffic; loud and constant noise; and regular exposure to chemicals, dust, fumes, and combustible materials.

      • Required to work outdoors on varied and often unstable terrain involving exposure to varying weather conditions of extreme hot and cold temperatures.

      • Some working conditions require special precautions and the use of protective gear (e.g., hard hats, respirator masks, gloves, etc.).

      Physical Demands:

      • Essential functions involve significant physical demands related to repeated lifting of up to 50 pounds unassisted, 100 pounds with assistance rarely; carrying tools, materials, and equipment over rough terrain; climbing, reaching, and bending.

      • Frequently required to walk, sit, talk, drive, hear, bend, stoop, twist, and balance; need the ability to occasionally kneel and crawl; need the ability to grasp manual controls and the ability to use foot controls and operate gas, diesel, and electrically powered equipment.


      Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
