The Hampton City Attorney’s Office has two openings for Assistant City Attorneys to join its Development and Finance Team. The City Attorney serves as the chief legal advisor to the City Council, the City Manager, and all departments, boards, commissions, and agencies of the city. The City Attorney’s Office is comprised of twelve attorneys, five paralegals, and two administrative assistants, organized into two teams – Litigation and Development & Finance.

The Development & Finance Team represents the city’s interests and advises city officials and staff in all contract, real estate, land use, finance, tax, and development matters. Representative client departments include Community Development, Economic Development, Public Works, Emergency Management, Finance, Procurement, Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services, Assessor, and Hampton Coliseum.

Land Use Attorney – The Development & Finance Team has an opening for an attorney to serve as primary counsel to the Planning, Zoning, and Development Services divisions of the Community Development Department and to the Planning Commission. This attorney may also support the Board of Zoning Appeals. Legal experience in planning, zoning, and land development is strongly preferred.

Transactional/Project Development Attorney -- The Development & Finance Team also has an opening for a newly-created position primarily to support commercial and residential development projects administered by the City of Hampton in cooperation with the Hampton Redevelopment and Housing Authority. Legal experience in real estate transactions, public-private partnerships, complex commercial transactions, or housing is strongly preferred.

These are in-person positions, with telework permitted up to two days per week as schedule and work assignments allow. Both positions may require attendance at evening meetings. Specific work assignments may vary depending on experience, interest, and workload demands. Applications should explicitly highlight relevant experience and identify whether the applicant is interested in one or both positions.

These positions are anticipated to be filled as Assistant City Attorney II. The minimum qualifications for Assistant City Attorney II are a juris doctorate from an accredited law school (or equivalent recognized by the Virginia State Bar), a minimum of two (2) years of experience as a practicing attorney, and membership in good standing with the Virginia State Bar or eligibility for admission. Either position may be filled at the Assistant City Attorney I or III level if warranted by the relevant experience and expertise of the successful candidate. The anticipated hiring range is $82,806 to $115,928. The selected candidates will be required to complete a criminal background check.

The City Attorney’s Office offers a collaborative, congenial work environment through which it provides the highest quality of professional, effective, and ethical legal counsel and advocacy. Respect, support, appreciation, and achievement recognition are valued. Candidates can expect a significant amount of intensity, productivity, and hard work, coupled with a reasonable work/life balance, recognizing the importance of personal care and stress reduction through ample time to spend with family, friends, and pets and to enjoy personal endeavors.

The purpose of the class is to assist the City Attorney in performing a wide range of professional legal services to all City departments, various boards and commissions, and the City Council.
