      Position Summary

      As a member of the Office of Information Technology (OIT), the Assistant Director of Campus Services oversees the managers and technical staff of the OIT Service Desk and Computing support teams who are responsible for providing quality technical services and computer support to administrative departments, academic schools, centers, and institutes. This role is responsible for all aspects of the Campus Services teams’ performance and services.

      The role includes developing and implementing IT policies and procedures and ensuring the technology services support Rice’s technology goals and objectives. This includes collaborating with other computing support teams and working closely with other leaders within OIT, OIT's partners, and customer groups to facilitate smooth and effective teamwork.

      The role is also responsible for designing, implementing, and improving the procedures related to OIT's Campus Services performance, as well as ensuring clear communications of the scope, objectives, approach, and progress with clients including service level agreements and computing support models.

      Experience and Education Requirements

      • Bachelor’s Degree
        • In lieu of the education requirement, additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year-for-year basis may be substituted
      • Seven years of management experience in a technical field
        • In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year-for-year basis may be substituted
      • Skills required:
        • Strong leadership, project management, and communication skills
        • Strong interpersonal, collaborative leadership, and diplomacy skills
        • Departmental management, systems implementation, and customer relations
        • Strong understanding of technology infrastructure and systems, including servers, networks, and cloud-based services
        • Understanding of multi-platform mission-critical systems including Windows, Linux, and Macintosh operating systems
        • Familiarity with a client services environment including the development of service-level agreements and utility computing models
        • Must be fluent in written and spoken English
        • Must be able to explain difficult abstract concepts verbally and in writing through presentations
        • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
        • Proficient problem solver

      Essential Functions

      • Provides operational management and leadership for members of the campus services teams
      • Oversees managers and technical leaders to define, plan and execute operations and project-based goals
      • Manages complex projects (both technically and logistically) including project planning, implementation, staff allocation, and staff performance
      • Recruits, retains, manages, and mentors staff
      • Performs all other duties as assigned

      Additional Functions / Information

      • Leads the team in providing support for the end user computing environment
      • Manages technical staff and works with technical support personnel including system administrators, desktop support personnel, supervisors, consultants, and audio/visual personnel
      • Provides feedback and updates to support staff, project teams, and OIT Leadership
      • Designs and provides insight and feedback on technical proposals, presentations, and other project development documents related to Campus Services
      • Ensures standard operating procedures, methodologies and documentation are updated and applicable
      • Manages the budget for the Campus Services department and ensures resources are allocated effectively.
      • Stay up to date with industry trends and emerging technologies, and make recommendations for new methodology, tools, and techniques to improve, enhance, or restructure the Campus Services support model
      • Participates in technology and management conferences and site visits
      • Works with OIT staff and appropriate university customers to anticipate operational changes associated with information technology services
      • Facilitates communication of policies/needs between the customers and OIT; arbitrates priorities with customers in a consistent and clearly articulated fashion
      • Works with OIT staff to handle customer priority escalation and unique technical requests

      Preferences

      • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field
      • Master’s degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field
      • ITIL and/or ITSM Certification
      • Management experience in higher education or research environment
      • Experience managing hybrid or remote staff
      • Experience with BYOD (bring your own device) support and implementing cloud solutions
      • Experience managing knowledge base material
      • Experience with IT budgeting and financial management
      • Experience with cybersecurity and data protection practices
      • Project Management experience, including the ability to scope, plan, and prioritize multiple projects
      • Demonstrated experience as a collaborator and business partner
