      Position Summary:

      The Health & Counselling Centre is a dedicated health and wellness department for students at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) campus. We provide primary health care, mental health care, specialty care (psychiatry, dietetics, sports medicine) and health promotion to both undergraduate and graduate students. The health promotion team provides education outreach across the campus to provide the knowledge and skills to students to stay healthy and academically successful. The health promotion team also plays a role in providing key health messaging and resource information to support all UTM community members. This position will oversee and manage the increase in programming and staff related to the expansion in scope for health promotion programming and activity.

      Reporting to the Medical Director, Health & Counselling Centre (HCC), the Assistant Director Health Promotion & Evaluation, provides leadership for the administration of HCC health promotion projects on campus and is a key member of the senior management team. The Assistant Director has responsibility for ensuring the integration of sound management practices and the optimal use of human and financial resources within the departmental structure. In collaboration with the senior management team and other members of the UTM community, the Assistant Director will develop project frameworks to support and align the various departmental initiatives.

      The incumbent will be required to manage health promotion departmental staff; clarify and strengthen the roles and responsibilities of staff to reflect emerging organizational priorities; develop program policies and procedures; develop, monitor, and evaluate the health promotion program budget; and ensure mechanisms are developed and implemented to review and evaluate departmental programs.

      Working under general direction of the Medical Director, the Assistant Director is responsible for project management and implementation to ensure the health promotion work of HCC can be carried out efficiently and effectively. The Assistant Director is responsible for identifying issues, advising on strategy options, recommending solutions, implementing project plans, and responding to the objectives andpriorities of the HCC. The role of the Assistant Director will continue to evolve and the individual must be willing to respond to the given priorities of the day and be willing to work cooperatively in a challenging and dynamic environment.

      The Assistant Director will also direct the activities of the Registered Dietitian and all educational and promotional programming for students related to nutrition on campus, the health promotion nurses, and will direct any research assistants assigned to the HCC to support student mental health initiatives. The Assistant Director will be responsible for coordinating and overseeing the communications for the HCC, including directing the activities of the Wellness Communications Specialist. The Assistant Director will be responsible for coordinating and overseeing evaluation of health promotion and clinical programming offered through the HCC and reporting on outcomes to the Medical Director.

      Essential Qualifications:

      Education:

      • Master’s degree in a health-related discipline, including health promotions (preferred), psychology, social work, nursing, physical education or acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience. Recognized certification in project management is an asset. PhD in a health-related discipline is an asset.

      Experience:

      • Minimum five (5) years of demonstrated managerial experience and progressively responsible experience in leading and managing large-scale health promotion and health-related projects in a post-secondary setting, public health, workplace health, medical setting, or comparable environment.
      • Demonstrated experience in a project management capacity, including all aspects of process development and execution.
      • Experience coordinating public health programs, compiling and analyzing data, writing reports, working on time-sensitive projects and managing multiple priorities.
      • Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusivity in community development.
      • Demonstrated experience with developing and monitoring budgets. Proven ability to develop, monitor and evaluate strategic plans, programs.

      • Human resources experience; experience with managing in a unionized environment preferred.

      Skills:

      • Project management, solid computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint), and Adobe Acrobat required. Social media skills (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok).
      • Graphic design skills an asset (Canva, Publisher/Illustrator, etc). Evaluation software skills an asset (e.g., SPSS, etc).

      Other:

      • Experience at working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is essential; demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of stakeholders comfortably and professionally with a customer-service orientation and maintaining confidentiality, including but not limited to students, staff, faculty, and senior university officials; exceptional communication (oral and written) skills; able to adapt to shifting priorities, demands and timelines through analytical and problem-solving capabilities, and strong time-management abilities; capacity to react to project adjustments and alterations promptly and efficiently in a collaborative manner; flexibility during periods of rapid change; persuasive, encouraging, and motivating.
      • Ability to read and evaluate communication styles of team members and contractors who come from a broad spectrum of disciplines. Strong influencing and negotiating skills.
      • Ability to elicit cooperation from a wide variety of sources, including upper management, clients, and other departments; strong conflict management skills - ability to defuse tension among project teams.
      • Ability to bring project to successful completion while recognizing organizational unit sensitivities and culture.
      • Strong interpersonal skills.
      • Excellent customer service skills an asset
      • Critical ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
      • Demonstrable ability to make difficult decisions, particularly at critical junctures
      • Forecasting resource shortages and reacting to prevent project bottlenecks from occurring, and raising attention to leadership where appropriate.
