Job Description

- Performs duties associated with assignment to Probate Court, Juvenile Court, Drug/Mental Health Court, Magistrate Court, or civil forfeitures.
- Prepares and tries criminal cases.
- Attends weekly court sessions in Superior Court.
- Meets with victims of criminal cases; interviews witnesses.
- Conducts court hearings, including preliminary hearings, revocation hearings, motions to suppress and other hearings.
- Reviews files and prepares Grand Jury indictments and accusations.
- Reviews files and prepares plea offers/recommendations.
- Communicates and negotiates with defense attorneys.
- Conducts criminal case investigations.
- Prepares motions, orders and pleadings.
- Researches case law.
- Discusses cases with law enforcement officers, co-workers, supervisors, and other court-related personnel.
- Meets with pro se defendants to discuss resolutions to pending cases.
- Attends Drug Court/Mental Health court sessions.
- Locates and serves subpoenas to victims and witnesses.
- Prosecutes traffic violations in Probate Court.
- Performs related duties.
- Knowledge of local, state and federal law.
- Knowledge of investigative tools and techniques.
- Knowledge of trail proceedings.
- Knowledge of computers and job related software programs.
- Skill in the completion of legal research.
- Skill in producing persuasive legal arguments.
- Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Graduation from an accredited school of law.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Current membership in the State Bar of Georgia.
- The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping or walking. The employee occasionally lifts light objects.
- The work is typically performed in an office.
This position is responsible for the prosecution of criminal cases. This job is a safety sensitive position that will require a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with Barrow County Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace.
