Overview
The Department of Geosciences at Utah State University (USU), Logan, invites applications for an academic-year (9-month), tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Solid Earth Geohazards, anticipated to begin August 2023. Qualified applicants may be considered at the Associate level. We seek candidates who conduct innovative, interdisciplinary, and quantitative investigation of Earth processes that contribute to geologic hazards. Disciplinary expertise may include but is not limited to neotectonics, paleoseismology, geodesy, structural geology and lithospheric deformation, and subduction-zone geohazards.
Responsibilities
The position involves academic research (50%), teaching (40%) graduate and undergraduate courses, advising/mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, and service (10%) to the academic community. Successful candidates will complement our department’s current strengths and demonstrate outstanding potential for excellence in research and scholarly leadership through development of a dynamic, externally funded research program. Candidates are expected to contribute to our core undergraduate and graduate curriculum. We are especially interested in candidates committed to mentoring and advancing diverse and inclusive graduate and undergraduate research programs. The successful candidate may join faculty members in USU’s College of Science JEDI STEM Collaboratory to enhance Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in STEM fields.

The Department of Geosciences is a vibrant and growing Earth science program with 15 faculty and four lecturers that hosts postdoctoral researchers and visiting scientists (://geo.usu.edu/). The department offers dissertation/thesis-based PhD and MSc degrees, as well as a professional Master’s option. Research resources include a new rock deformation and fault mechanics lab; laboratories for luminescence dating, light stable isotope, ICP-MS, and X-ray analyses; a microscopy lab with a Raman spectrometer, petrographic and stereoscopes; mineral separation facilities; a field-emission scanning electron microscope, and a new microCT scanner.
Earth science research at USU is enhanced by collaborative opportunities with other USU departments and research centers, including the departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering; Watershed Sciences; Plants, Soils, and Climate; the Ecology Center; and the Utah Climate Center.
