      Req#: 47978
We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s student body as an Assistant Professor of Philosophy beginning in the 2025-2026 academic year.

AOS: Applied Philosophy (Bioethics, Business, Computer Science). AOC: Open.
The department of philosophy is seeking to strengthen its expertise in applied philosophy, broadly understood to include the critical application of philosophy to fields such as bioethics, medicine, human rights, business, and computer science, or their conjunction (e.g. digital capitalism or artificial intelligence in medicine). We seek interdisciplinary and innovative candidates whose philosophy will help us understand and find new directions in navigating life in the 21st century. Candidates’ interests and expertise should extend outward from philosophy to engage the texts, theory, practice, and/or application of philosophy into other fields. Candidates who can speak critically and creatively to the framing of contemporary philosophical and practical problems in ways that address the messiness of the actual world—e.g., issues of power, social relationships, political economy, and/or politics—are especially welcome to apply. This position is part of the philosophy department’s ongoing interest in strengthening its Bioethics MS and creating new concentrations in Business and Computer Science under the banner of an Applied Philosophy degree. The ability to speak to faculty and students in the relevant areas beyond philosophy is desirable. Additionally, a demonstrated ability to contribute to the department with excellent and innovative teaching, student recruitment, grant funding, or administrative service are all further pluses. Since the Philosophy department embraces UTRGV’s vision of becoming the premier bilingual Hispanic-serving Research Institution in the United States, we welcome candidates to show how their experience, work, or teaching might support these priorities by engaging with issues of importance to the Rio Grande Valley, the U.S./Mexico border, or culturally and linguistically minoritized communities more generally. Successful candidates will demonstrate research potential consistent with UTRGV's strategic plan to become an R1 institution.
