      Job Description

      San Diego State University Imperial Valley is seeking an Assistant Professor with expertise in Elementary Literacy (Grades K-6) Education. The successful candidate will join the faculty in the School of Teacher Education in the College of Education (www.sdsu.edu) and will work at SDSU Imperial Valley ( located in Calexico, California, 120 miles east of San Diego.

      SDSU Imperial Valley is a branch of San Diego State University (SDSU) with approximately 1,200 undergraduate and graduate students, predominantly Hispanic/Latinx. It is a Hispanic-Serving Institution committed to diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence. The campuses are in Calexico and Brawley, California, offering opportunities for interdisciplinary and cross-national research due to its proximity to the Mexican border and strong community ties. The salary range is $72,000 to $75,000. This is a non-remote, full-time position starting August 2025.

      The candidate will be expected to maintain an active scholarly record, support community partnerships, and provide service to the university.

      Qualifications

      • Earned Doctorate in Literacy Education, English Education, or a closely related field (ABD candidates considered if completed by August 1, 2025)
      • Evidence of scholarly publication and a research agenda in literacy
      • Commitment to social justice and equity, with a theoretical grounding in critical perspectives
      • Experience teaching literacy in diverse TK-6 settings in the U.S.
      • Meet at least two Building on Inclusive Excellence (BIE) criteria, such as engagement with underrepresented populations, mentoring, or research involving underrepresented communities

      Applicants should include in a separate diversity statement how they meet at least two BIE criteria.

      Preferred Qualifications

      • Fluency in Spanish
      • Reading and Literacy Leadership Specialist Credential (RLLSC) or equivalent
      • University teaching and supervising experience
      • Potential for grant writing
