  Position: Full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the title/rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Full Professor commensurate with qualifications. This position will be located at the Grand Rapids Health Campus.

  Overview: Grand Valley State University’s (GVSU) Masters in Physician Assistant Studies program (MPAS) welcomes applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the title/rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Full Professor commensurate with qualifications.   Location: GVSU Grand Rapids Health Campus, Grand Rapids, Michigan

  Required Qualifications: The requirements for this position include:

  • Applicant must be an NCCPA-certified physician assistant with a minimum of a Master’s degree (PA degree focus) or a board-certified (ABMS or AOA) physician. Applicants must be eligible for a Michigan license.
  • Documented record of professional and/or academic achievement.
  • Have at least three (3) years of clinical experience.
  • Demonstrate leadership and motivational skills and the ability to work effectively with others.
  • Possess requisite knowledge of technology used in an academic setting (i.e., Microsoft Office).
  • Possess a strong commitment to the mission and goals of the university, college, and Department/Program.

  Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in a related field (e.g., DMSc, DHSc, EdD, M.D., D.O., PhD).
  • Two (2) years of academic experience or health-related teaching.

  • Ability to facilitate active learning and integrate educational technology into teaching.

  Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  Educational/Teaching

  • Assist with designing, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating the professional PAS program curriculum.
  • Develop appropriate teaching materials, including written, audiovisual, computer, and self-instruction materials.
  • Participate as a course coordinator for courses as needed.
  • Provide lectures, labs, and other educational sessions to students.
  • Supervise and instruct students in the didactic and/or clinical year.
  • Evaluate student didactic and clinical performance in accordance with established program learning outcomes, competencies, instructional objectives, and performance standards.
  • If needed, assist with making clinical site visits to monitor student progress and assess the quality of training.
  • Actively participate in the academic advising of PAS program students to ensure satisfactory progression in achieving PAS program competencies.
  • Actively participate in assuring the availability of remedial instruction to PAS program students as needed.

  Administrative

  • Assist in the admission process, including the recruitment, application, screening, and selection of students.
  • Assist the Department Chair/Program Director with recruiting, interviewing, selecting, and developing qualified faculty, including principal and instructional faculty.
  • Assist the Department Chair/Program Director with recruiting, interviewing, selecting, and developing Departmental/Program administrative staff.
  • Coordinate, review, and revise academic policies and procedures as needed.
  • Develop, review, and revise the PAS program mission, goals, and competencies as necessary.
  • Assist with PAS program evaluation and ongoing self-assessment.
  • Participate in the assessment of instructional faculty who serve as adjuncts, independent contractors, supervised clinical practice experience preceptors, and hospital community experience preceptors.
  • Assist the Department Chair/Program Director in providing periodic reports as required and requested to the Dean, College of Health Professions, University, accrediting agencies, and other outside agencies.
  • Assist the Department Chair/Program Director in communicating and cooperating with other departmental chairs and program directors to promote mutual interests.
  • Promote rapport with local physicians, PAs, and other healthcare providers.
  • Assist the Department Chair/Program Director and Clinical Coordinator(s) in working with local agencies to promote the continual development of clinical training sites and instructional faculty who serve as supervised clinical experience preceptors.
  • Assist the Department Chair/Program Director and the Clinical Coordinator(s) in maintaining contact with instructional faculty who serve as supervised clinical experience preceptors to ensure the achievement of Program educational objectives.

  Service

  • Serve as members and/or chair Department/Program, College of Health Professions, and University Committees.
  • Engage in interdepartmental activities which promote the interest of the Program.
  • Attend and participate in Departmental/Program and College of Health Professions faculty/staff meetings.
  • Attend and participate in Departmental/Program, College of Health Professions, and University academic and social functions.
  • Attend meetings of professional organizations and societies.
  • Participate in state, regional, and national organizations concerned with the profession to promote a positive image of the PA concept within the academic, lay, and professional communities.
  • Engage in community activities to promote the PA profession, encourage increased utilization of PAs, and recruit potential PA students.

  Scholarly Activity

  • Develop and maintain a scholarship agenda.
  • Disseminate scholarship in both written and publication format.
  • Promote scholarly inquiry in students as they matriculate in the program.

  Miscellaneous

  • Participate in ongoing self-assessment to promote development in teaching, service, and scholarly activities.
  • Remain clinically active and current in the practice of medicine, where applicable.

  Salary: Commensurate with experience and degree.

  Department/Division: The Physician Assistant Studies program is a 28-month, graduate-level program within the College of Health Professions. The program was established in 1995 and has graduated nearly 900 physician assistants. Currently, the program has 12 faculty. The PAS program is located in the GVSU Health Campus in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a rapidly growing area that includes three hospital systems, multiple primary care and specialty practices, and the Van Andel Research Institute. The GVSU Health Campus is a state-of-the-art facility with abundant lab space, technologically supported classrooms, computer labs, and a new Simulation Center supporting the 19 professional programs in the College of Health Professions. The Simulation Center includes ten in-patient exam rooms, a maternity suite, 24 outpatient standardized patient exam rooms, four interactive immersive virtual technology rooms, an interprofessional flex lab, a plastination anatomy lab, an operating room, a model living suite, numerous high fidelity pediatric and adult patient simulators, and a robust pediatric and standardized patient program.
