Contributes to basic and applied research activities and authors scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and patent preparations.

Minimum 1 year of relevant experience
Serve as an expert using scientific flow cytometery knowledge and professional judgment in the design and implementation of FACS analysis for islet assessment and improvement methods.
Responsible for on-call rotation in the GMP Facility for islet isolation, FACS analysis and other pancreas related activities
Coordinate and conduct research activities related to improvement of islet isolation and maximization potency assay (beta cell fractional viability).
Actively engaged in the operational and research and development (R&D) functions of the cGMP human cell processing division. Expected to have primary responsibilities for the isolation and processing of islet cells, iPSCs, Car T, and other somatic cell types that may be processed in conformance with strict FDA guidelines. In addition to processing complex and technically demanding skills, the candidate must be able to exercise independent judgment and work without supervision through out the various stages of the cellular harvesting process (which may include isolation of cells through density gradient, separation, purification, or positive/negative selection using antibodies, determination of purity/quality, etc). The cellular and products of these harvests are cultured, assessed, and prepare for infusion, shipment, translational research and/or clinical transplantation. The candidate is also expected to contribute actively to the development and testing of new methodologies and technologies, including the design and execution of experiments, the independent evaluation of new equipment, reagents, and other collateral materials, and to make recommendations based on expertise and experimental results.
Responsible for overseeing all equipment management activities for cGMP operations, including Installation Qualification (IQ), Operational Qualification (OQ), Performance Qualification (PQ), and equipment quality control, including preventive maintenance (PM).
MD or PhD with two years experience in cGMP enviroment.
Fluent (oral/written) English.
Advanced knowledge flow cytometery and various imaging equipment.
Good interpersonal and organizational skills.
Ability to work independently.
Attention to detail and accuracy.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for troubleshooting the Flow Cytometers FACS analysis. The individual will also conduct cell analysis using various imaging equipment, perform data analysis, and prepare data presentations. Oversees cGMP equipment management, including IQ/OQ/PQ, quality control, and preventive maintenance. Responsible for processing of human pancreata to isolate human islet cells, including cleaning, cannulation, enzyme preparation, distention, digestion, dilution, separation of islets using discontinuous gradients, counting of islet cells and culture of islet cells. Candidate is expected to exercise independent judgment at multiple junctures of the 6-8 hour process, take corrective actions, and troubleshoot as needed. Responsible for the distribution of all cellular products resulting from each procedure including all functions related to the Islet Distribution Program. Actively participate in the design and execution of experimental R&D initiatives to improve current technologies and methodologies used in the human cell processing facility, including but not limited to testing of new media and reagents to determine suitability of use, assessment of new equipment and disposable materials, design of new components used in isolation, and making independent recommendations on same to Operations Manager and senior management. On-call rotation for processing of human pancreas during nights, weekends and holidays. Responsible for all quality control issues in the clinical Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) facility including but not limited to media preparation, laboratory maintenance, reagent receipt and inspection, data entry and analysis, stocking of supplies, and the oversight of day to day functions of equipment of the laboratory. Assist in the development of training programs and the execution of instruction workshops for visiting faculty, scientists, observers, post doctoral fellows, students, etc. Responsible for other duties and projects as assigned by Operations Manager. Independently carry out the isolation, purification, evaluation, analysis, and distribution (cryopreservation when indicated) of pancreata, organoids, and any other source of somatic cells for research or clinical use. Carry out and improve upon all Quality Control Functions of a GMP facility, including media preparation, reagent receipt and inspection, and day to day functions of equipment. Actively participate in the design and execution of all cGMP R&D activities so as to improve existing proprietary/commercial technology and methodology currently in use at the DRI for the processing of human cellular products Assisting with grant applications, budget development, and financial management. Assist with the training of students, employees and visiting scientists Other projects and duties as assigned
