      The Opportunity

      Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is seeking an experienced Associate Controller reporting directly to the Vice President and University Controller . Th is individual must be skilled and experienced with the ability to provide collaborative leadership, direction and management for financial accounting and reporting, which must comply with accounting principles promulgated by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and University policies. The Associate Controller must possess strong communication skills and the ability to interact productively with all constituents of the University.

      Reporting Organization

      The Associate Controller will lead a staff of 11 full-time employees (4 direct and 7 indirect) in the areas of Financial Accounting and Reporting, Cash Control Management, Financial Aid and Sponsored Programs Accounting and Tax Management.

      Key Responsibilities and Opportunities for Associate Controller

      Accounting and Reporting

      • Support and oversee accounting functions of the Controller’s Office, with a concentration on general ledger (fixed assets, agency, accounts receivable, long-term debt, etc.), cash control, balance sheet reconciliations, and grants and contracts.

      • Prepare/coordinate accounting journals, account reconciliations and analyses, and monthly, quarterly and annual close cycle including financial reporting. Timely financial management reporting is essential.

      • Ensure that the University is in compliance with federal and state audit guidelines and Uniform Guidance, Uniform Administrative Requirements, and cost principles and assist in planning and performing annual audits and internal audits.

      • Oversee grant/sponsored program and contract accounting, billing and collections. Ensure team conducts proper and careful documentation, processing data and payments related to subcontractors of the University’s grants and contracts.

      • Assist with proposal preparation and negotiation of indirect cost rates.

      • Serve as Controller’s Office liaison with the Office of Sponsored Research Administration to ensure compliance.

      • Implement controls and monitor activity for financial accounting functions, including financial reporting reviews. Evaluate new systems and processes for appropriate controls.

      • Maintain current knowledge of financial methodologies, technologies, and regulatory environment necessary to support financial operations including research of federal and state laws and regulations.

      • Design and implement procedures that support compliance with changing accounting standards. Evaluate complex transactions to determine proper financial accounting, including related organization and component unit analysis.

      • Work on special projects including researching technical issues, providing data to other stakeholders for key reports including bondholders and rating agencies, implement new accounting standards, and maintain investment and long-term debt reporting systems.

      Tax Management

      • Oversee the preparation of the University’s, and applicable subsidiary’s, tax returns and related financial disclosures including Form 990, Form 990-T, Florida Form F-1120, and Arizona Form 99T.

      • Adhere to federal and state tax compliance requirements, resolve tax notices, gather data and assist in field exams; provide tax guidance to specific departments as needed.

      • Determine appropriate tax objectives, scope, and methodology and actively participate in decisions related to tax matters.

      • Propose and implement modifications to existing accounting policies and procedures that impact tax and compliance.

      • Assist with the development of tax-related communications and training for University departmental personnel to improve awareness on tax matters and financial compliance.

      • Monitor the University's tax compliance, particularly in high-risk tax areas, identify potential tax exposure due to non-compliance, assist with the recovery of taxes paid in error, if any, and facilitate process improvements to mitigate compliance gaps and weaknesses.

      Qualifications

      Required Qualifications

      • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration

      • Minimum of seven years of accounting experience including at least three years supervisory experience to include grants/sponsored program and contract experience

      • Working knowledge of Uniform Administrative Requirements

      • Working knowledge of a complex ERP application; efficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite

      • Strong financial and analytical skills required to analyze information, practices, or procedures to identify patterns, trends, and inconsistencies, develop logical and objective conclusions and formulate alternatives and their implications

      • Ability to ensure all deliverables are accurate and provided by established deadlines while anticipating implementation or workload issues related to emerging development

      Preferred Qualifications

      • Master’s degree in accounting, finance or other related field

      • Certified Public Accountant

      • Experience at an institution of higher education

      • Working knowledge of Workday Financial Management

      • Familiarity with Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) pronouncements
