      Title: Associate Director, EHS (Environmental, Health, Safety)

      Location: Richmond, VA, on-site

      Location/Division Specific Information

      Our PPD® Laboratory Services team has a direct impact on improving patient health through the expertise of scientists, industry thought-leaders and therapeutic experts.       Discover Impactful Work:

      The Associate Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) will have oversight of all EHS programs and site support activities at the PPD, part of Thermo Fisher Scientific, Bioanalytical and Vaccines Laboratories and facilities in Richmond, VA.

      A day in the Life:

      • Provides strategic direction and leads by example to ensure safe practices and regulatory compliance in all assigned facilities.
      • Manages a staff of EHS employees.
      • Responds and provides follow-up to health, safety, and environmental issues to site management.
      • Ensures that all licensing, permitting, or other environmental, health or safety requirements are met at assigned site and takes appropriate actions to ensure that any non-compliance issues are resolved.
      • Management of chemical and biological waste streams Maintains and monitors waste manifest system. Completes reporting forms regarding hazardous waste for all required regulatory agencies.
      • Conduct/Coordinate training in emergency response situations, hazardous materials handling/storage/disposal, radiation, industrial hygiene, life safety, and ergonomic compliance-related activities etc. Develops and implements refresher training for various health and safety topics as required by the regulations.
      • Conducts regular walk-downs and yearly self-assessments of assigned facilities and conducts employee health hazard exposure monitoring to ensure OSHA compliance.
      • Lead Intuitional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and complete risk assessments for various risk group agents to support new projects
      • Develops and updates all health and safety related mandated procedures for assigned facilities. In addition, ensures that procedures meet federal, state, and local requirements (i.e. OSHA, EPA, DOT, etc.)
      • Works through corporate Worker’s Compensation Administrator to supply information on Worker’s Compensation related claims to insurance company.
      • Assists supervisors in conducting work-related injury/illness investigation.
      • Oversees all ergonomic related issues and makes recommendations as appropriate.
      • Additional duties may include leading Health & Safety committees, supports Radiation Safety Officer, maintain controlled substance program, evaluate/maintain all safety equipment, coordinate fire drills and/or work with assigned site on regulatory inspections or other internal and external audits

      Keys to Success:

      Education

      • Bachelor's degree in environmental health, life science or natural science or equivalent and relevant formal academic / vocational qualification
      • Master’s degree in environmental health, life science or public health preferred

      Experience

      • Previous related experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job (comparable to 10+ years).
      • 5+ years of management responsibility

      Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

      • Comprehensive knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, IATA and other applicable regulations
      • CIH, CSP, CSHM, OSHA certification preferred
      • Knowledge of laboratory and hazardous waste regulations to include hazardous chemical/biohazard storage and disposal regulations
      • Knowledge of air monitoring strategies and worker's compensation requirements
      • Knowledge of ergonomics and how to conduct ergonomic evaluations
      • Excellent presentation skills and the ability to provide effective training
      • Strategic problem solving skills
      • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
      • Demonstrated good judgement and business acumen
      • Excellent computer skills
