Contribute to sourcing, analyzing, and recommending compelling new investment opportunities, for inclusion in the portfolio.
Conducting thorough due diligence on prospective opportunities including analysis of investment strategy, process, organization, portfolio positions and performance.
Monitoring existing and prospective managers (performance, manager letters, exposure reports, financials, 13F filings, webcasts, annual meetings, etc.).
Contribute to quantitative portfolio analyses including, but not limited to, asset allocation, geographic exposure, industry exposure, liquidity, risk metrics and performance attribution.
Remaining current on new managers and developing trends by attending conferences, annual meetings and building and maintaining a well-developed network of contacts within the investment community.
Preparing and presenting recommendations regarding new investment opportunities and asset class updates to the Investment Office Staff, as well as presenting regularly to the Investment Committee.
Working with the operations team to develop and maintain reports that analyze fund and portfolio-level exposures (including sector, geographic, leverage, underlying positions, etc.), risk metrics, liquidity, and performance attribution.
Performing ad hoc analysis as requested by the CIO.
Acting as a team player; holding others accountable, providing clarity, encouragement and feedback, as well as being receptive to feedback and making modifications to one’s approach and behaviors, as needed.
Assisting in building the team’s reputation for professional excellence and credibility both inside the College and throughout the investment management community.
A proven investment track record and commitment to achieving excellence in investment performance
Significant investment experience in buyout, growth equity, and venture capital.
Strong quantitative, analytical, and organizational skills with a high attention to detail
Ability to incorporate rigorous qualitative and quantitative analyses in the evaluation of investment strategies, human and organizational dynamics, investment processes and investment performance
A broad understanding of portfolio theory, asset allocation, portfolio construction, and economics
Proactive, creative, and independent thinking, with a passion for exploring investment themes and innovative strategies
Clear investment philosophy, with the ability to remain intellectually open to new ideas and approaches
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Willingness to work in ambiguity and adapt to changing and competing priorities
Ability to work in an entrepreneurial environment
Team-oriented and willing to roll up their sleeves to contribute to the group’s common objectives

Experience across several asset classes including public equities, fixed income, and hedge funds preferred.
How You’ll Contribute
Reporting to the Society’s Chief Investment Officer, the Associate Director of Investments will collaborate on investment manager identification, due diligence, and oversight of the diversified investment portfolios. As the Society in-sources their portfolio from their current consultant model, they will work closely with the Chief Investment Officer to establish best-in-class portfolio management and investment processes and guidelines.
The ideal candidate is proactive, has strong communication skills, is highly collaborative and transparent, is intellectually curious, and demonstrates strong quantitative skills. They should be committed to and passionate about the Society and its mission and should recognize and be excited about the opportunity to build a differentiated and successful investment portfolio, while contributing to the growth and mission of the Society.
The Associate Director of Investments will be a generalist and will work across all asset classes, however, they will ideally have had exposure to a wide range of asset classes with experience in public market investments. The successful candidate will source, evaluate, and monitor external managers, and will participate in decisions related to asset allocation, portfolio construction, and risk management.Your Impact

Educational Background
Strong academic credentials are required; an MBA/CFA or other advanced degree is preferred.
Minimum Years and Type of Experience
8+ years of relevant experience as an investor at an endowment, foundation, family office, fund of funds, OCIO firm or similar organization allocating capital to external investment managers. Individuals will be selected more for their communication skills, investment acumen, and overall philosophy than for any particular background.

The salary range for this position accounts for a wide range of factors including but not limited to organizational need; specific skill sets; experience and training; certifications; and more. At the National Geographic Society, individuals are typically hired at or near the starting point of the salary range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
The salary range for this position is $213,750 - $236,250.

Some Resident staff must be at Base Camp every day to do their jobs, while others may only need to be physically present onsite some of the time to meet looming deadlines or to get work done and may require a unique schedule. As such, this category has been revised to provide maximum flexibility depending on what’s required for each individual role. The days Resident staff come into the office will be determined by their teams and workflow, and they should work with their supervisors to determine their specific schedule. And throughout the year, their schedule may be adjusted based on cyclical work cycles, deadlines, and/or ebbs and flows of work.Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
