Founded in 1973, the Southern Oral History Program (SOHP) is a core program of UNCs Center for the Study of the American South and is one of the most distinguished oral history programs in the nation. The SOHPs unparalleled interview database, numbering approximately 7,500 interviews, is housed in the Southern Historical Collection of UNCs Louis Round Wilson Special Collections Library. UNCs Center for the Study of the American South (CSAS) is a hub for interdisciplinary research, scholarship, and teaching about Carolinas complex home region. Founded in 1993, CSAS is an institute of UNCs College of Arts and Sciences. Position Summary

This position is located in the Study of American South Department within the College of Arts and Sciences. The Associate Director (AD) oversees the Southern Oral History Program’s (SOHP) daily operations, oral history projects, team management, teaching, and public outreach, and also works closely with the SOHP faculty director on visioning and development of its short- and long-range research projects and grants. The AD partners with University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) librarians, faculty, students, university, national organizations, and foundations to make SOHP interviews useful and accessible to communities, scholars, and practitioners worldwide and to create new and meaningful initiatives and partnerships. In the academic years 2023-2024 and 2024-2025, the Associate Director will take on two important leadership roles: coordinating the SOHP 50th anniversary events and partnerships, and serving as Project Manager for the LDF Oral History Project, a collaboration with NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Inc. The AD reports to the Faculty Director of the SOHP and the director of the Center for the Study of the American South at UNC-CH.

      Core Position Responsibilities:
      1. Teaching, Training, Management:
      - The AD serves as manager, supervisor, and mentor to all SOHP student affiliates including the SOHP Undergraduate Internship Program, the SOHP Graduate Field Scholar Program, work-study students, and contract oral historians and other collaborators.
      - The AD conducts oral history workshops on and off-campus.
      - The AD actively participates in UNC educational programs and annually or semi-annually teaches at least one of the core oral history seminars.
      - The Associate Director trains SOHP team members in the best practices of oral history fieldwork, processing of interviews from the field stage to repository, building collaborative relationships with SOHP’s oral history narrators and community partners, and fostering digital and print interpretations of SOHP’s work with a focus on accessibility for a wide range of audiences.

      2. Financial oversight; grants and development:
      - Working with the SOHP Faculty Director and CSAS administrative manager, the AD oversees the fiscal health of SOHP, its operational budget, and grant-funded project budgets.
      - In consultation with the SOHP Faculty Director, the Associate Director identifies grant sources and writes grant proposals, especially those furthering inter-institutional and community partnerships.

      3. Public Programs:
      - The AD works with the SOHP Faculty Director and SOHP team and affiliated faculty and contract staff on special events and programs, public performances, photography exhibits, publications, films, and video that both bring history back to SOHP interviewees and their communities, and share these narratives with the world.

      4. Communications:
      - The AD promotes SOHP with assistance from CSAS staff, UNC public relations, and regional and national networks to share SOHP accomplishments, projects, and opportunities.
      - The AD maintains, or supervises maintenance of, the SOHP website as a location for SOHP information, updates/news, fellowship opportunities, community oral history resources, and more.
      - The AD is responsible for a bi-monthly newsletter for SOHP supporters and alumni.
      - The AD interacts frequently with a national network of professionals in oral history, the public humanities, and Southern Studies at conferences and public meetings, as well as general audiences and issue-based movements across the South.

      5. CSAS Executive Team:
As a key member of the CSAS executive team, the SOHP AD works with the CSAS Director and Administrative Manager, as well as key staff of the quarterly journal Southern Cultures and Southern Futures initiative on strategic planning, content development, policy/procedures, assessment and evaluation, fiscal administration, and outreach to UNC students and faculty.
