The Division of Cardiovascular Surgery and Department of Surgery at Toronto General Hospital, University Health Network is inviting applications for the position of Surgical Director of Heart Transplantation.This would be accompanied by an academic position as Associate or Full Professor at the University of Toronto. The effective date of this appointment is flexible, tentatively aiming for July 1, 2024.
The Surgical Director of Heart Transplantation will work closely with the Medical Director of the Heart Transplant Program and will be responsible for all clinical, education, and research activities of the heart transplant program. Duties will include all aspects of clinical care of a full-time adult cardiac surgeon, education of cardiac surgery residents and fellows, and expanding the research and scholarly activities of the cardiac transplant program. Robust opportunities exist to enhance the existing research portfolio through collaboration with an array of clinicians and researchers within the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, Ajmera Transplant Centre, and the UHN Department of Surgery and across the University of Toronto.
The successful candidate will assume a prominent leadership role as the Surgical Director of the Heart Transplant Program in the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, Ajmera Transplant Centre, and Sprott Department of Surgery at the University Health Network. They must have broad experience in all aspects of the surgical care of advanced heart failure patients, including ventricular assist devices and mechanical circulatory support. In addition to a requisite track record of exemplary clinical results, the applicant should be a strong academic surgeon and be recognized as an expert in heart transplantation. Evidence of excellence in teaching and research is required.
The successful candidate should ideally possess strong leadership skills and a track record of scholarly activity. The appointment at UHN would be for a Surgeon Investigator position. The candidate must be eligible for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor at the University of Toronto and be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
University Health Network is comprised of the Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, and The Michener Institute of Education. It is one of Canada’s largest and leading clinical and research hospitals. UHN is an academic institution affiliated with the University of Toronto and is recognized internationally for excellence in patient care, innovation, research, and education. The Division of Cardiovascular Surgery is comprised of 7 full-time clinical faculty members and offers the entire breadth of cardiac surgery, including reconstructive valve surgery, aortic surgery, advanced heart failure, and adult congenital surgery.
The salary range will be $600,000- $700,000 and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
