    • Support the Lead School Nurse in maintaining a comprehensive school health services program for students
    • In coordination with the Lead School Nurse, provide first aid for illness or injury to students and employees during the school day, documenting nursing assessment, diagnosis and treatment; notify families, guardians and/or Emergency Medical Services (EMS) providers, as needed
    • Serve as the primary provider of first aid for illness or injury to students and employees during after school and summer programming, documenting nursing assessment, diagnosis and treatment; notify families, guardians and/or Emergency Medical Services (EMS) providers, as needed
    • Work with the Lead School Nurse to coordinate schedules to provide health care and ensure coverage of the health office whenever students are on campus and/or participating in WT-sponsored programs, including but not limited to, school days, staycations, in-service days, field trips, overnight trips, after school programs, summer programs, etc.
    • Support the Lead School Nurse in preparing and submitting reports required by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
    • Serve as a member of the Health Care Team
    • Assist in maintaining the health office in a clean, orderly and safe condition; dispose of biomedical waste and hazards according to establish procedures; support the Lead School Nurse in maintaining inventory and ordering first aid supplies as necessary; ensure medications are secured in locked cabinets
    • Observe and report any unusual behavioral finding or unsafe student activity to the Lead School Nurse
    • Assist the Lead School Nurse in maintaining student health records and accident reports including treatment records/logs, emergency medical information, immunization records, disability and allergy information, and mandated screenings (e.g., hearing, vision, etc.)
    • Assist the Lead School Nurse in assuring students have updated immunization records; review records and notify students/families of follow-up shots; prepare letters or exclusion notices and notify families and Head of School, as appropriate, being sure to track requests sent home
    • Assist the Lead School Nurse in receiving and reviewing student health files incoming from other schools; communicate with other schools as needed to clarify or obtain information
    • In collaboration with the Lead School Nurse, administer medications and perform procedures according to physician orders; ensure physician orders for individual student medications and/or treatments comply with requirements for administration
    • Assist the Lead School Nurse in organizing annual flu shot clinic for employees and providing information and/or training to employees regarding first aid practice, blood-borne pathogens, accident prevention, communicable disease information, etc.
    • Maintain professional licensure through required continuing education
    • Perform other duties as assigned
    • Valid Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse licensure is required
    • Experience in nursing practice, preferably with children, is desirable
    • Excellent customer service, communication and interpersonal skills
    • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
    • Ability to effectively collaborate and coordinate with students, families and colleagues
    • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
    • Winchester Thurston School, a Junior Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 independent day school in Pittsburgh, announces a search for an Associate School Nurse. The Associate School Nurse coordinates with the Lead School Nurse to plan for and provide direct services to students and employees to ensure that the school’s health program is carried out in accordance with the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In addition, the Associate School Nurse will be the primary provider of health services support to students who participate in after-school and summer camp programs at the school. This position is assigned the equivalent of an 11-month work schedule, with 38 days of paid time off. Typical hours of work are from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., with some flexibility required to ensure coverage of the health office for after-school programs. Some minimal travel is required for occasional day or overnight field trips. The individual in this position helps to maintain the health status of students and that of the school as a whole.

      The Associate School Nurse performs under the general direction of the Head of School and under the daily supervision of the Lead School Nurse. The individual in this position will work closely with the Lead School Nurse, students in grades Jr. Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12, employees, families, faculty, Division Directors, and student support services personnel. The Associate School Nurse provides support in a manner that advances and upholds the mission and philosophy of Winchester Thurston School.
