Collaborate with the Chief Nurse Executive and President of MCV Physicians in leading the organization's efforts to promote a culture that delivers world-class patient- and family-focused care through an exceptional and highly engaged workforce.
Partner with nursing, physician, and HR leaders to support and influence innovative APP workforce and professional development, retention, and recruitment models.
Build and maintain effective relationships and communication with colleagues, patients, organizational leadership, key stakeholders, and others (Executive Leadership, MCV Physicians, Medical Staff, Human Resources, School of Nursing, School of Medicine, and affiliate partners).
Works with leadership in developing evidence informed/innovative programs, services, staffing models, and initiatives to anticipate current and future APP needs aligned with national and market trends.
Collaborate with physician, nursing, and HR leaders to create market competitive compensation and benefit plans.
Initiates and maintains an organizational structure for the APPs to accomplish system goals and objectives.
Creates a culture that promotes collaboration, engagement, and optimal patient outcomes
Identifies shared opportunities between physicians, nurses, and APPs to increase efficiencies and foster team-based care and a collaborative culture
Addresses barriers to top-of-license and optimal team practice as it aligns with VCUHS medical bylaws
Establish consistent job descriptions and roles and responsibilities of clinical and leader APPs in collaboration with physician leadership.
Identifies APP associated metrics for assessing productivity and outcomes of APP quality of care and utilize data to identify and implement changes to optimize care.
Lead, coach, and mentor APP Directors and APP Leads in operationalizing APP strategic and operational plans.
Serves as point of contact and expert in appropriate leadership forums, examples include but are not limited to the Credentials Committee, Medical Executive Committee, and Clinical Recruitment Committee
Provide leadership for critical organizational projects, working with stakeholders to ensure effective and efficient planning and successful project implementations that achieve on-time and budget targets
Collaborate with Human Resources to monitor and evaluate turnover and recruiting trends and collaborates with key stake holders to promote retention and recruitment.
Creates an environment that supports team member and provider engagement, satisfaction, and equity.
Establishes and sustains APP shared governance councils, including the Committee of APPs and APP Leadership Council, comprised of APRN/PA and other essential leadership
Ensures compliance with applicable governmental rules and regulations are met and, in collaboration with key stakeholders, are followed by staff.
Advise Medical Staff Services on APRN and PA licensure, credentialing, and regulatory and legislative compliance within national, state, and VCUHS guidelines (including those related to Medicaid, Medicare, and HIPAA). Promotes completion of focused and ongoing professional practice evaluation (FPPE & OPPE) with Medical Staff Quality.
Develops and implements process improvement initiatives to support APP accountability and requirements regarding compliance, billing, and documentation in collaboration with physician leadership and health system administration.
In collaboration with CNE, CNO, and CMO, maintains and updates policies and procedures relating to advanced practice.
Accurately gather, synthesize, and communicate timely relevant information and recommendations including the regulatory issues that impact revenue cycle for entities.
In collaboration with Compliance and physician leaders, coordinates the billing practices of APPs across all entities
Works with Internal Audit and Compliance Department(s) to conduct periodic reviews of compliance with Health System policies.
Collaborates with CNO on credentialing of APRNs to ensure oversight of nursing practice in alignment with Joint Commission and Magnet Standards.
Develop a pipeline of talent to address current and future needs through innovative strategies and promoting APP clinical rotations. Create relationships with APRN and PA training programs and collaborate with Nursing Education and Professional Development on academic affiliations.
Supports APP orientation, onboarding, continuing education, and professional practice development.
Provides leadership, direction, and support, to APRNs and PAs regarding practice development, decision making, and professional development.
Ensures APPs receive effective peer feedback and evaluation of advanced practice.
Foster a robust academic health system partnership with the VCU School of Nursing and affiliated PA and APRN programs to support the schools in accomplishing their academic missions and to enhance the recruitment of high-quality graduates.
Provide oversight for and reduce barriers to creating and maintaining an accredited APP Fellowship(s) to promote APP transition to practice and elevate the profession.
Assume fiscal responsibility and collaborate with operational areas to develop and implement business plans as appropriate. Manages the MCV Foundation APP Gift Fund with the fund administrator.
Responsible for APP recognition and visibility – locally, regionally, and nationally.
Supports the engagement and promotion of APPs in research initiatives and quality improvement efforts.
Represents APPs within regional and national professional organizations. Examples include, but are not limited to, board membership, elected leader of a professional organization, or national conference planning committee.
Provides high quality patient care in specified clinical area.
Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide equitable care appropriate to the age of the patients served on their assigned unit.
Demonstrates knowledge and related competencies of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age, specific needs and to provide the equitable care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.

The Associate Vice President (AVP), Advanced Practice Providers (APP) is a clinician and administrative leader that is responsible for setting the vision and strategic initiatives, that align with VCU Health System’s (VCUHS) mission, vision, and priorities, for the APP workforce in partnership with executive level leaders. The AVP is responsible for enhancing and advancing the role of advanced practice registered nurses (APRN) and physician assistants (PA). This leader will serve as an expert resource and create an environment that promotes advanced practice and professional development at all VCUHS entities.
The AVP has responsibility and accountability for:
1. Strategic APP recruitment, recognition, engagement, and retention
2. APP role definition, utilization, optimization, and collaborative practice models
3. Compliance with local and national legislative and regulatory requirements
4. Credentialing and Privileging Authority in partnership with Chief Medical Officers (CMO), Chief Nursing Officers (CNO), Chief Nursing Executive (CNE), and Medical Staff Services
5. Building academic health system partnerships with affiliated APRN and PA Programs, which includes oversight of effective processes to support students and preceptors
6. Oversight of orientation and onboarding, competency assessment, professional development, and ongoing education
7. Creation and maintenance of accredited APP Fellowship(s) by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship Accreditation (APPFA)
8. Coordinates activities and organizational initiatives that enable VCU Health System to be recognized within the healthcare community for excellence, inclusive of nursing, and continued recognition as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center
9. Research and publication of APP outcomes, impact, and value

Employment Qualifications
Required Education:
Master’s degree in a related field from an accredited university (examples include but are not limited to: Master of Science in Nursing, Master of Medical Science, Master of Science)
Preferred Education:
Additional certification or degree in health care leadership (examples include but are not limited to DNP, DMSc, DNAP, MBA, MHA, Graduate Certificate, PhD)
Licensure/Certification Required:
Virginia licensure from the appropriate Board as an APRN or PA.
National certification from appropriate certifying bodyMinimum Qualifications
Years and Type of Required Experience
10 years of progressive leadership in healthcare, preferably in academic medicine (examples include but are not limited to enterprise committee chair, APP Lead, APP Manager) in Nursing or APP clinical practice.
3+ years of supervisory experience leading direct reports.
Demonstrated leadership and initiative in healthcare excellence.
Demonstrated success working in a matrixed management model.
Strong communication, negotiation, and conflict management skills.
Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
Must be willing and able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as the role necessitates.
Must be willing to commute across VCUHS entities.
Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and regulatory requirements
