      The Associate Winemaker will work under minimal supervision, ensures the accomplishment of winemaking quality, wine style and the attainment of production goals. Executes tasks which drives wine quality, and wine style to meet winemaking goals. Oversees daily winemaking and wine work activities. Communicates with winemaking staff to support daily work assignments and winemaking objectives. Functions as a technical and creative resource for winemaking matters. Understands and influences full spectrum of all processes in winemaking, from growing grapes (raw materials stage) through quality of wine delivered to consumer.

      What You Will Do:

      • Manages wine blends and establishes winemaking procedures.
      • Oversees winemaking and wine work implementation as it pertains to wine quality, jointly with Winemaker.
      • Ensures wine quality, wine style and winemaking operations meet expectation in the absence of winemaker.
      • Schedules short term wine work plans with input from Winemaker, Assistant Winemaker, and cellar operations.
      • Resolves issues surrounding logistical, quality and labor limitations with the same personnel.
      • Ensures production plans and quality parameters are met in terms of bottling, lab analysis follow-up from daily wine work, blending and other cellar operations.
      • Develops long-term work plans.
      • Identifies aromas and flavors in wines and recommends treatments to improve wine quality through tasting of inventory at assigned location(s).
      • Actively participates in wine tasting process and is responsible for attainment of wine flavor profiles which meet marketing needs.
      • Addresses supply/demand issues to help assure out of stock occurrences are minimized and the winery inventory is balanced.
      • Oversees cellar process management of grapes, juices and wines including chemical and ingredient additions, racks, transfers, clarification, blends, shipping and final preparation for bottling.
      • Ensures the best implementation of long-term work plan to meet production and bottling schedule.
      • Manages supplies and ingredients, including pre-harvest winemaking supplies, all wine additives and Fining agents.
      • Makes short-term decisions, including during harvest to accommodate inflow of fruit and subsequent juice work to meet priorities.
      • Influences harvest decisions in the grapes received, crushing, pressing and fermentation process.
      • Participates on cross-functional continuous improvement teams for winemaking processes and procedures.
      • Maintains wines within internal “gold standard” specifications from grape to bottle.
      • Serves as a spokesperson for the winery to the trade, works with Marketing and Public Relations to support the technical side of their work and to communicate winemaking goals to employees.
      • Oversees the department and wine quality and production in the absences of the Winemaker.

      What You Will Need:

      • Bachelor's degree in Biological Engineering, Biology, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Viticulture and/or Enology, Fermentation Science, Nutritional Science, Food Science or Microbiology plus 4 years of enology, winemaking, or viticulture experience or Gallo Vineyard Operations or Gallo Quality experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility; OR Bachelor’s degree plus technical certification in enology or viticulture, plus 7 years of experience in chemistry, enology, viticulture or winemaking experience or Gallo Vineyard Operations or Gallo Quality experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibilities.
      • Required to work extended hours during peak times of the year to ensure wine quality.
      • Must have experience in making wine.
      • Must have participated in wine harvest season.
      • Valid driver’s license. Required to obtain a California driver’s license or appropriate state driver’s license within 30 days of hire.
      • Required to identify and articulate variances in wine color by sight and identify wine flavors by taste and smell.
      • Required to be at least 21 years of age.
      • High school diploma or State-issued equivalency certificate.
      • Required to travel to company offices, sites, and/or meeting locations for onboarding, training, meetings, and events for development, department needs, and business delivery up to 5% of the time, with or without reasonable accommodation. This may be in addition to travel requirements, if applicable, as listed in this job description.

      What Will Set You Apart:

      • Bachelor's degree in Biological Engineering, Biology, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Viticulture and/or Enology, Fermentation Science, Nutritional Science, Food Science or Microbiology, plus 6 years of enology, viticulture or winemaking experience or Gallo Vineyard Operations or Gallo Quality experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility.
      • Master’s degree in Viticulture and/or Enology.
      • Experience working with multiple grape varieties.
      • Experience with cellar work, such as racking, blending, crush pad, press operations, barrel filling/emptying, various forms of filtration and winery cleaning/sanitation.
      • Supervisory experience in the lab or cellar.

      Compensation:

      Hiring Salary Range Posted: $87,000 - $130,600 / year
      Actual compensation paid within the range will be determined by factors such as the education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.
