Vanderbilt University’s Communication and Marketing team offers a yearlong internship named in honor of former Vanderbilt Athletics trailblazer June Stewart. Stewart, a Vanderbilt Athletics administrator from 1973-2001 and the first female president of the College Sports Information Directors of America, was one of a very few women nationally to be employed by an athletic department of a major university when she started her storied career. During her 30 years in athletics administration, Stewart was on the front lines for many changes in collegiate athletics including the widespread introduction of women’s participation and the growing importance of marketing and technology. She was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 and was part of the Vanderbilt Athletics Hall of Fame’s inaugural class in 2008. She is also part of the CoSIDA Hall of Fame and the Tennessee Sports Writers Hall of Fame.
The goal of the fellowship is to provide an immersive experience within college athletics while serving as the communications contact for a Vanderbilt women’s varsity program. As a member of Vanderbilt’s athletic communications staff, the primary responsibility and focus of this individual will be to tell and share the compelling story of Vanderbilt’s athletics programs. This position will also support all communications activities for Vanderbilt Athletics.
This fellowship is an excellent opportunity to experience various aspects of athletics communications—including planning, content creation, social media, historical archiving and media relations—in a real-world setting. Fellows can expect to gain experience writing for various digital and social media channels.
