- Serve as a member of school-based and division-level attendance teams and Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) teams.
- Collaborate with school staff and community partners to provide training and support focused on the prevention and reduction of chronic absenteeism.
- Provide psychoeducation, resources, and direct support to caregivers to improve student outcomes.
- Deliver specialized individual interventions to address underlying causes of student absenteeism, including trauma, mental health, or family challenges.
- Act as a liaison between the school and external agencies such as social services, court services, and family service providers.
- Monitor and analyze student attendance data to identify students in need of intervention.
- Lead presentations to multidisciplinary teams regarding truancy cases and participate in decision-making regarding supports and next steps.
- Represent the school division in court, presenting relevant data and documentation in truancy proceedings.
- Prepare and compile necessary documentation for Family Assessment and Planning Team (FAPT) referrals, including Individual Family Service Plans and Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) assessments.
- Maintain accurate, confidential, and complete case records in accordance with legal and ethical standards.
- Conduct home visits to engage families, assess needs, and provide support.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the principal or supervisor.
- Required Education: Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW)
- Licensure/Certification: Possession of a valid Virginia license issued by the Board of Social Work.
- Preferred: Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or a Pupil Personnel Services License with an endorsement in School Social Work issued by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE)
- Experience: Prior experience in school social work or related fields preferred
- Other Requirements: Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel within the district for home visits and community meetings.

Summary:
The Attendance Officer (School Social Worker) provides specialized support in school and community settings to promote regular school attendance and reduce chronic absenteeism. Utilizing expertise in trauma-informed care, mental health, counseling, and family systems, this position collaborates with school staff, families, and community partners to develop and implement intervention plans that address the root causes of truancy and chronic absenteeism, enabling students to succeed educationally.
Essential Functions:
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
The Attendance Officer (School Social Worker) must demonstrate a strong understanding of trauma-informed care, family systems, and mental health principles. Knowledge of laws related to compulsory school attendance and child welfare is essential. The position requires excellent communication, collaboration, and case management skills, as well as the ability to analyze attendance data, prepare detailed reports, and present information effectively to various stakeholders.

Duties are normally performed in an office and school environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. A social worker must exhibit manual dexterity to operate a phone; enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed materials with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the phone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms and on the phone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.
